Buenos Aires tango championship with Tango de Pista and Escenario, plus the city championship milonga, vals and senior divisions.

Tango de Pista and Tango Escenario for couples aged 18 and over, plus the city-level milonga, vals and senior divisions, rated out of 10. Install it, adapt it to your own milonga night or school contest, and open entries the same day.

The Buenos Aires tango championship is a dance competition for couples, run by the city and open to amateurs and professionals alike. It has two layers: the world championship itself, which has exactly two categories, Tango de Pista (social, floor-style tango) and Tango Escenario (staged tango), and a feeder city championship that adds Milongueros del Mundo, Milonga and Vals. Entry to the world championship is free and open to dancers aged 18 or over.

Both layers narrow the field over four rounds: a qualifying round, quarter-finals, a semi-final and a final. In Tango de Pista the field falls from 300 couples to 150 and then 36; in Tango Escenario it falls from 90 to 45 and then 17. Panels grow as the rounds go on, with five judges early, six in the semi-final and seven in the final. Each round is scored on a decimal scale that moves up a band as the stakes rise: 5 to 8 early on, 6 to 9 in the semi-final and 7 to 10 in the final. A trimmed mean discards the highest and lowest marks before the average is taken.

Awards are one champion per category plus places two to five, and a separate prize for the best senior couple, which requires both partners to be 55 or over. The city championship is where Milonga and Vals sit, and the rules are explicit that those two categories do not qualify anyone for the world championship. The city championship also splits Tango de Pista and Milongueros del Mundo into an adult division (18 to 54) and a senior division (55 and over).

This template turns that structure into a ready event. It has four age groups (Mundial-Adulto, Mundial-P.Sr, Ciudad Adulto and Ciudad Senior), five On Stage items, ten item-by-group assignments, couple (team) entries for both genders, a 10-minute ceiling per performance and a rating out of 10. The three grade bands mirror the round score bands, and the rank list carries the champion, places two to five and the senior-couple prize. Organisers running a smaller milonga night or school tango contest can delete the groups and items they do not need.

Where this event comes from

The tango championship in Buenos Aires grew out of the city’s own tango culture and is now a long-running international competition for dancing couples.

Where this event is run

This template follows the Buenos Aires format only: a world-level pair of categories and a city-level feeder championship. It suits an organiser running a tango festival, a milonga night, a dance school contest or a cultural society showcase that wants couple entries, judge panels and round-banded scores in one place. Other styles of ballroom or Latin dance would use a different template.
