Every candidate is placed into one of these groups by age, and competitions are run per group.
- Year 2 & Under — ages 4 to 7
- Years 3 and 4 — ages 7 to 9
- Years 5 and 6 — ages 9 to 11
- Years 7,8 & 9 — ages 11 to 14
- Years 10 and 11 — ages 14 to 16
- Years 12 and 13 — ages 16 to 18
- 14-25 years — ages 14 to 25
