Kerala School Sasthrolsavam Manual 2025: Categories, Grading and Rules Summary

Every year, coordinators and parents search for the Kerala School Sasthrolsavam Manual — the rulebook the General Education Department issues that governs the Science, Maths, Social Science, Work Experience and IT fairs together known as Kerala School Sasthrolsavam. The manual is a government circular, revised and re-issued periodically (the 2025 revision explicitly voids every earlier Sasthrolsavam manual and amendment), so always confirm the current year’s exact text with your own school or education office. What follows is a practical, plain-language summary of the structure that governs the festival — useful for planning your event while you confirm the current circular. (മലയാളത്തിൽ വായിക്കുക)

The four categories, and two different finish lines

The manual groups students into four categories by class, and — unlike the school kalolsavam, where every age group climbs the same number of levels — not every Sasthrolsavam category travels the same distance:

CategoryClassesHow far it goes
I1–4 (LP)School → sub-district. Ends there.
II5–7 (UP)School → sub-district. Ends there.
III8–10 (HS)School → sub-district → revenue district → state.
IV11–12 (HSS/VHSS)School → sub-district → revenue district → state. HSS and VHSS compete as one combined unit.
From the manual’s general categories section. Confirm against the current year’s circular.

Grades and points, with a 60% floor

Every entry is marked out of 100 against its own item’s criteria. Nothing below 60% gets a grade at all; everything at 60% and above splits into three bands, each carrying its own point value toward the school or unit’s running total:

MarkGradePoints
80% and aboveA5
70–79%B3
60–69%C1
Below 60%No grade0
From the manual’s own grading table. This is the same 80/70/60 banding the school kalolsavam uses — a useful detail for a coordinator who runs both festivals and has to remember two different grading scales (the CBSE Sahodaya kalotsav, for comparison, grades at 70/60/50).

One division per student — with a quiz exception

A student may compete in only one of the five divisions — Science, Maths, Social Science, Work Experience or IT — in a given year. The manual carves out one exception: a student can additionally take part in the quiz competition of any other division, on top of their main division. A coordinator building entries by copying a generic participant list across all five fairs will over-enter students who aren’t actually eligible everywhere they’re listed.

What else the manual settles

  • Online entry, carefully done. All competitions from sub-district to state level run through online registration, which the manual says must be done “with great care.” The head of the institution is responsible for the accuracy of every online entry, and a student photo upload is mandatory at registration.
  • Video recording is mandatory, not optional. Every item competition from sub-district to state level must be video recorded. On-the-spot competitions are recorded in the order entries are completed, and the Programme committee is responsible for it — worth knowing if you’re organising rather than just entering, since it’s an operational commitment, not a suggestion.
  • State-level participants also exhibit. Beyond competing, state-level entrants prepare a short write-up about their own exhibit (with photos) and submit it during the competition; participants at every level from school to state also take part in a public exhibition of their work, separate from the judged competition itself.
  • Green Protocol compliance is a stated requirement for the entire festival, not a side note.
  • Financial accounts close within a month. Organisers must get the mela’s income-and-expenditure accounts approved by the organising committee within one month of the event and submit them to the education office’s treasury.

For the full item catalogue and how judging actually works across the five fairs’ three different scoring models, see the Sasthrolsavam fairs overview. For the verified item-code lists schools use on the real sub-district entry forms, see the Science Fair, Maths Fair, Social Science Fair, Work Experience Fair and IT Fair item lists.

Running your Sasthrolsavam on eTalenter

Every setting above — four categories with two different finish lines, the 60%-floor grade bands with their own point values, and five divisions each with their own item lists and scoring models — is exactly what eTalenter is built to configure once and run consistently. Results, grades and the qualifying shortlist for the next round come straight out of the system instead of being recomputed from a paper scoresheet. See online registration and judge scoring and tabulation for how the setup works.

You can see it without signing up. Open a live demo and log in as a demo coordinator or judge — it’s read-only, so nothing you click changes a real event.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get the official Sasthrolsavam manual?

It’s issued by Kerala’s General Education Department and revised periodically — the current revision states that every earlier manual and amendment is void. Always confirm the current year’s exact text with your school or education office; this page summarises the structure (categories, grading, division rules) to help you plan.

Can a student compete in both Science Fair and Maths Fair the same year?

Not as a main competitor in both — the manual limits a student to one division. They can, however, also enter the quiz competition of a different division on top of their main one.

Do Category I and II students compete at district or state level?

No. Category I (classes 1–4) and Category II (classes 5–7) competitions end at the sub-district level. Only Category III (classes 8–10) and Category IV (classes 11–12) continue to the revenue district and state rounds.
