Kerala University Youth Festival — A Kerala University Youth Festival, Section by Section

Youth Festival

Youth Festival · University

University of Kerala’s official inter-collegiate youth festival: 102 items across Music, Dance, Literary, Theatre and Fine Arts, open to bonafide college students, with the real average-of-3-judges scoring formula.

Sets up an inter-collegiate youth festival from a Kerala university’s published rules – five sections across music, dance, literary, theatre and fine arts, with 61 distinct items and 102 item entries open to degree and diploma students – so a college or university coordinator starts from the real programme instead of a blank page.

A Kerala university youth festival is an inter-collegiate arts competition in which students from a university’s affiliated colleges perform and compete in a ladder of rounds, usually college level first and then the university final. This template reproduces the programme from a Kerala university’s published youth festival rules: five sections – Music, Dance, Literary events, Theatre events and Fine Arts – holding 61 distinct competition items that expand to 102 item entries once the gender splits are counted. It runs from Light Music, Classical Music and Veena through Bharathanatyam, Kathakali and Thiruvathira to Debate, Short Story Writing, Mono Act, Mime, Painting and Spot Photography.

Eligibility is by enrolment, not by age band. Entrants are bonafide full-time students on a degree, postgraduate degree or diploma course, so the template carries a single Students group with a representative age range of 17 to 25 rather than a set of age categories. Roughly four entries in five are individual and the remainder are team items such as Group Song, Group Dance, Western Vocal Group, Ganamela, Debate and Kerala Nadanam Group. Many solo music and dance items are published separately for male and female entrants, while the rules state a single gender explicitly for a few traditional items: Oppana, Thiruvathira and Margamkali for girls, and Vattapattu, Arabanamuttu, Dufmutt and Kolkali for boys. Everything else is open to both.

Each entry has its own performing time limit, from a few minutes for a light music or recitation turn up to a half-hour stage item, and every entry is marked out of 100. Literary and fine-arts items such as essay, poetry, painting and poster making are sitting-based and run to a set writing or drawing time rather than a stage slot. Language-split items – for example the written literary events – are run as separate competitions per language where the source allows, so a coordinator can add or remove languages to suit the round.

Results follow the rules’ own scheme. First, Second and Third places are decided on the average of the three judges’ marks, and the rules discard an outlier judge whose mark differs from the other two by more than 20 per cent. That averaging formula is not a template field, so a coordinator applies it when entering the panel’s marks. What the template does install is the rank points: 5, 3 and 1 for First, Second and Third in an individual item, and 10, 6 and 2 for a team item, which add up into a college-wise points table across the whole festival. Judging criteria are installed only where the rules print a set that adds up correctly; items without a printed set ship without criteria and need the panel’s own added before marking begins.

Where this event comes from

Kerala university youth festivals are a long-running tradition of inter-collegiate arts competition in the state, and this template follows one university’s currently published youth festival rules rather than a generic format.

Where this event is run

Kerala, India, where universities hold youth festivals for the students of their affiliated colleges, usually with college-level rounds feeding a university final. The item list also suits any college, student union or alumni group elsewhere that wants a collegiate programme built on the Kerala style of items, including the classical and folk Kerala arts alongside Western music and contemporary literary and fine-arts events.
