A GCC kalotsavam is the Gulf Malayalee community’s version of the Kerala school arts festival, run by an association, club or group of schools instead of a single school board. Every organiser writes its own rule book, so there is no single item list. Below are four real structures from four Gulf organisers’ own rule books, as a programs list with age groups, items, time limits and (where printed) placement points that you can adapt for your own kalotsavam.

How a Gulf kalotsavam differs from the Kerala school festival
- Age groups, not school classes. Children come from many schools and curricula, so groups follow age — counted on a cut-off date — instead of class.
- Usually one level. Most associations run one kalotsavam in a single city. Larger ones use city-based sub-groups but still publish one set of results.
- A wider catalogue. Alongside Kerala items such as Oppana, Margam Kali and Mohiniyattam, Gulf lists often add film songs, western dance, karaoke, music band and general-knowledge or memory tests.
- Fees and membership. Entry fees are set in local currency, and members of the association often get reduced fees or member-only awards.
Structure 1: numbered age groups and a wide Gulf catalogue
Used by a Malayalee association’s children’s kalotsavam in the Gulf. Five numbered groups by age, plus two team pools, and a long list that mixes Kerala items with film, western and general-knowledge events.

Used by a diaspora association running one kalotsavam across several Gulf cities. Five categories from age 4 to 18, plus junior and senior group pools, with a shorter list close to the Kerala school festival.

Structure 3: an interschool talent fest, grouped by school class instead of an association’s own age bands
Used by an Indian social club’s interschool talent fest, held over several days at the club’s own auditorium. Unlike Structures 1 and 2, which are run by a single association for its own members and group children by age, this one is open to several schools and groups participants by school class — closer to how a Kerala school kalolsavam is organised, just run by a community club rather than a school board.

Two honest gaps in this structure, carried over from the organiser’s own published schedule rather than filled in: no judging criteria, marks weighting, grades, ranks, prizes, entry fees or per-school entry caps are printed anywhere — so every item defaults to a plain maximum score with no criteria breakdown until the organiser adds one — and the schedule does not say whether most items are run as individual or team entries, so items like Light Music, Film Song and the solo dances are treated as individual by inference from how they are worded (“solo”), not because the organiser printed that word for every item. If your own fest is like this one, start from one plain score per item and add criteria, points or prizes once your committee decides them, rather than guessing a rubric the organiser never wrote down.
Structure 4: an Oman kalotsavam with placement points and a championship title
Used by a Muscat-based Malayalee association’s annual kalotsavam. Age groups run on four numbered bands (Sub Junior to Open) plus three team bands, and — unlike Structures 1 to 3 above — every solo and group win earns a fixed placement point, which rolls up into two championship titles. The rules print no judging criteria, marks breakdown, time limits or grades for any item, so every entry here is scored out of a plain 100 and ranked; this is the honest gap carried over from the organiser’s own published rules.

On-stage items include Bharathanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kuchippudi, Kerala Nadanam, Semi Classical Dance, Folk Dance, Cinematic Dance, Classical Music, Light Music, Film Song, Drama Song, Mappilapattu, Nadanpattu, Recitation (Malayalam and English, run as one competition with a Malayalam and an English entry), Fancy Dress, Instruments, Story Telling, Extempore Dance, Extempore Spot Dance, Mono Act, Kathaprasangam, Elocution, Gadhya Parayanam and Ottanthullal. Off-stage items are Pencil Drawing, Pencil Colouring, Water Colouring, Story Writing, Poem Writing and Essay Writing. The 14 group events add Semi Classical Dance (Group), Classical Dance (Group), Folk Theme Dance, Cinematic Dance (Group), Oppana, Thiruvathira, Margam Kali, Kol Kali, Duffmuttu, Nadan Pattu (Group), Group Song, Mime, Mehendi Design and Indian Folk.
Group events use three age bands of their own — below 10, 10 to 18, and 18 and above — and the age of the oldest participant decides which band the whole team enters. Placement points are fixed and printed: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 for the first five places in a solo event, and 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 in a group event; joint winners get the same points. Two individual championship titles (Kalaprathibha and Kalathilakam, named after the equivalent Kerala school kalolsavam titles) go by total solo placement points, but only to a participant who entered at least four solo events — off-stage items count towards that four, group points do not.
Rules this programme does not have a platform field for are left to the organiser’s own event settings rather than guessed here: entry fees (quoted by the source in Omani Rial, by event type), a seven-solo-event cap per participant, a three-entry minimum to run an item at all, moving a short-entry item’s participants up to the next age group, splitting an item with more than 30 entries into two by age, and prize rules that scale with the number of entrants.
What “(Common)” means in a kalotsavam item list
In Structure 1, some items appear twice: Cinematic Dance (Common) and Cinematic Dance, or Film Song (Common) and Film Song. The “Common” version is for the youngest groups, where boys and girls compete together. From the older groups the same item splits into separate boys’ and girls’ entries, so one item becomes two on the stage schedule. Plan stage time for that before you print the programme.

Yes. Associations with branches in several cities can set each city up as a sub-group under one event, so entries are managed city by city and the results are still published together.
Can a community club run a kalotsavam open to several schools, not just its own members?
Yes — Structure 3 above is exactly that: an interschool talent fest hosted by a community club, where entries come from multiple schools and children are grouped by school class rather than the club’s own age bands. It still runs on the same platform as an association’s members-only kalotsavam; only the age groups and who can register change.
Does a Gulf kalotsavam always give a championship title like the Kerala school festival?
Not always — it depends on the organiser. Structure 4 above prints fixed placement points (5/4/3/2/1 for solo events, 10/8/6/4/2 for group events) and awards individual championship titles to whoever tops the solo points after entering at least four solo events. Structures 1 to 3 do not print any points or championship-title rule at all, so every entry there is simply scored and ranked per item with no overall title.
