Every Sunday School association writes its own talent test circular, so there is no single Sunday School talent test item list. They do share a pattern: the children are split into narrow age bands, the items are songs, Bible quiz, Bible verses, storytelling, speech, writing and drawing, and the test runs from the local church up to a district and state round. The structural difference from the other three: this circular doesn’t stop at childhood. Adults keep competing in the same talent test as Intermediate, Seniors and Super Seniors, each item still gendered where the circular splits it. It also prints a placement scheme instead of grades only — 5 points for first, 3 for second, 1 for third — but only when an item draws at least 3 entries in that age band; smaller turnouts get no points that round.
Structure 5: UK school-Year classes, paired for competition, with no marks printed at all
Used by a UK-based Mar Thoma church’s own Sunday School talent competition circular, which groups children by school Year rather than by age band.

The structural difference from the other four: classes are grouped by school Year, not by an age-in-years band, so the platform’s age-group settings are set as an approximation (Year 1 & 2 as ages 5–6, Year 3 & 4 as 7–8, and so on) while the circular itself names classes, not ages. The circular also prints judging headings for every item — Art is scored on creativity, neatness, use of colours and overall presentation; Singing on tune, diction, tone and timing; Story Telling on content, clarity, moral application and presentation; Elocution on content and speaking presentation — but no marks, no placings, no points and no entry fee for any of them. Memory Verse Recital is the one exception with a visible scoring shape: one point per correctly recited verse, with no printed maximum.
Structure 6: a fully online talent test spanning three world regions
Used by a global online Sunday School network whose members are spread across many countries, run entirely over a video call rather than in a church hall.

The structural difference from the other five: nothing happens in a church hall. Live items run on a video call with every entrant identified by a chest number held up to the camera, while written and art entries are uploaded through a shared link instead of handed to a judge. Three separate regional groups (covering different continents) run the same talent test on their own date and time, so members scattered across the world never need to travel to compete. Each item still awards placement points — 5 for first, 3 for second, 1 for third — and a child’s points across every item they enter in their bracket add up to a cumulative title for that bracket within their own region, not a single global ranking.
Structure 7: a Gulf church talent test with a per-church entry cap and no marks printed at all
Used by a Kuwait-based Indian church’s annual talent test, run for its own Sunday School and open only to children registered through their home church.

The structural difference from the other six: this circular prints no marks, weights, grades, ranks, points or prizes at all — not even the judging headings Structure 5 prints. The only scoring note on the whole sheet is that Light Music is judged on melody, harmony and rhythm, with no weight given to any of the three, so every item ships with a plain default maximum of 100 for the organiser to decide how to use. The circular also caps entries at three participants per church per event, requires every registration form to be signed by that church’s pastor, committee or elders, and allows no spot registration — rules a chest-number system doesn’t have a field for, so they’re enforced through the registration form and sign-off, not through age-group or item settings.
Structure 8: a Gulf church talent search with a preliminary round before the final, for singing and storytelling
Used by an Abu Dhabi-based Indian church’s annual Sunday School Talent Search, run entirely by school class rather than by age.

The structural difference from the other seven: two items run a preliminary round before the final rather than being judged in one pass — Nursery through Junior singing and Beginner/Primary storytelling each hold a preliminary, and only the top 12 go through to the scored final. As with Structure 7, no judging aspect carries a printed mark, so every item ships with a plain default maximum of 100; the printed prize rule (top three per category, each needing at least 60 percent) sets no points, so no ranks or grades are shipped either. The circular also caps every student at three individual items, requires the NIV translation only for Bible items, and disqualifies a Bible Reading entrant who takes more than one minute to find their portion — rules a chest-number system doesn’t have a field for, so they’re enforced through the registration form and the judges’ own briefing, not through age-group or item settings.
Which structure should you use?
- Large association with many churches? Structure 1’s narrow bands keep a 9-year-old from competing against a 13-year-old. Its Common and Group pools stop instruments and group songs from being split into tiny age groups. It also gives teachers their own category, with song, quiz and essay, so staff can take part without competing against students.
- Want to include every child? Structure 2 adds a Group G for children with special needs, with its own solo and colouring items. Those children compete among themselves, and every child who wants to take part has an item to enter.
- A single parish or a small Sunday School? Structure 3’s four broad bands are easy to fill. The youngest children get colouring, action song, a solo and a group song — items a four-year-old can actually perform.
- Want adults to keep competing alongside the youth wing? Structure 4 runs one circular from pre-schoolers to adults, with a placements scheme (5/3/1 points, minimum 3 entries) instead of grades only.
- Grouping children by school Year instead of age, with no marks at all? Structure 5 pairs Years into classes (Year 1 & 2, Year 3 & 4, and so on), prints judging headings for every item but no marks, placings or points, and keeps the event purely participatory.
- Members scattered across several countries, with no shared venue? Structure 6 runs the whole talent test over video call with chest numbers shown on camera, split into three regional groups on separate dates, and still keeps cumulative placement points (5/3/1) per bracket within each region.
- A single Gulf church that wants strict entry control and no scoring pressure? Structure 7 caps every item at three participants per church, requires a signed form from the pastor or elders, and prints no marks, grades or points for any item — the simplest, lowest-stakes structure of the eight.
- Running a large entry pool through singing or storytelling and need to shortlist first? Structure 8 holds a scored preliminary round for those two items and only takes the top 12 through to the final, keeping the final session short even when hundreds enter.
Before you publish the circular
- Fix the age cut-off date, so a child’s band does not change halfway through the season.
- Set the Bible portions for quiz and verse items early; children and teachers need weeks to prepare.
- Decide grades or ranks. Some Sunday School tests publish grades only and give no awards — say which you will do.
- Plan the levels: church first, then district, sometimes zonal, then a state final, with each church’s coordinator sending its winners upward.
