The North Lincolnshire Music and Drama Festival’s Drama classes (125+ years running): 2 real classes (Duologue, Monologue) across a real Primary/Secondary/Adult age ladder, built from the festival’s own official 2026 syllabus.

A ready-made drama festival with two classes, Monologue for solo performers and Duologue for pairs, run across three tiers (Primary, Secondary and Adult) with time limits of five to ten minutes.

This template models the drama classes of a long-running music and drama festival in the north of Lincolnshire, in eastern England, whose drama week takes place over several days in March. Children, teenagers and adults perform short prepared pieces in front of a single adjudicator, who gives spoken feedback and awards a placing. It is built from the festival’s published 2026 syllabus, so the two classes, the three age tiers and the time limits are real, but dates, fees and entry conditions change every year and the current syllabus must be checked before the template is reused.

Two items are modelled. Monologue is an individual class in which one performer presents a single prepared piece. Duologue is a pair class in which two performers share a scene and enter as one team. Both are open to boys and girls and are performed in English. The festival also lists verse speaking, prose speaking, Bible reading, public speaking, mime, storytelling, Shakespeare and one-act plays, but those families are not part of this template.

Entry is by tier rather than by exact age. Primary is for performers attending primary school, Secondary for those attending secondary school, and Adult for everyone above that. The template turns these into three age groups: Primary from 4 to 11, Secondary from 12 to 18 and Adult from 19 upwards. Duologue allows six minutes in every tier. Monologue allows five minutes for Primary and rises to ten minutes for Adult. Duologue classes may use make-up, costume and props, and a script must be supplied for the adjudicator.

The syllabus prints a ladder of mark bands, from Developing at 65 and over up to Exceptional at 95 and over, but no points for each band and no criteria sheet. Every competition is therefore scored out of a nominal 10 on a single mark, and entry fees are set to zero so each organiser can add their own. Organisers should tell entrants beforehand how characterisation, voice, movement and, for pairs, the interaction between the two performers will be weighed.

Where this event comes from

The drama classes are one section of a festival that has been held in the same part of eastern England for well over a century.

Where this event is run

Competitive drama and speech festivals are a long-standing tradition in the United Kingdom and in countries with a similar school system, including Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and parts of Canada. Local arts societies, schools and drama teachers run smaller versions of the same format, with an adjudicator, a time limit by age tier and a single mark per performance.
