RSPBA pipe band competition, graded by playing standard from Novice Juvenile through to Grade 1.

Sets up a graded pipe band contest: nine band grades from Novice Juvenile B up to Grade 1, one team entry per band, and a four-adjudicator panel marking out of 100.

This template builds a pipe band championship in the Scottish competitive tradition. A coordinator opens an event that already holds the band grades, the single team item and the placing points, instead of starting from a blank catalogue. It suits organisers of band championships, regional contests and gatherings where pipe and drum corps compete against others of a similar standard.

Bands are graded by playing standard, not by the age of the players. The template carries Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3A, Grade 3B, Grade 4A and Grade 4B for adult bands, plus Juvenile, Novice Juvenile A and Novice Juvenile B for bands of players under 18. A band enters the grade that matches its standard, and the organiser decides how bands move up or down between seasons. Because a band can legitimately sit in more than one grade at different events, the adult grades allow overlap.

There is one item, the pipe band competition, and every entry is a team of any gender with no language attached. The panel in the source rules is made up of two piping adjudicators, one drumming adjudicator and one ensemble adjudicator, and the template scores each entry out of 100 as Marks. The published rules print no per-criterion split, time limit or fee, so none is asserted here; the zero fee and open time limit are working defaults for the organiser to change.

To run it, open the Registration Page for band entries, add your adjudicators, and let the tabulation produce a ranked result per grade. First, second and third carry 10, 6 and 3 points. Solo piping is deliberately not modelled: solo pipers are graded on their own separate ladder, so run them as a separate event if you need them.

Where this event comes from

Pipe band competition grew out of the military and community piping traditions of Scotland, and its graded championships were later organised by governing bodies.

Where this event is run

Scotland, where it began, and the pipe band communities of Ireland, England, Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, where bands compete in graded championships. It is a poor fit for solo piping or Highland heavy athletics, which use different grading and judging.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change this template after installing it?

Yes — installing it creates a fully configured, live event, not a locked package. Every age group, competition item, rule and scoring setting can be edited afterwards to match exactly what your event actually needs.

Do I need technical knowledge to set this up?

No. Installing a template does the setup work for you; you only need to review the details (dates, unit or house names) and open registration.
