An Australian troupe dance competition (2026 information pack): 16 troupe event types – classical ballet, neo-classical, demi-character, contemporary, lyrical, commercial jazz, jazz, hip hop, song and dance, tap, acro, contortion, pom, production, collaboration and education – by average-age category, with Novice Junior, Intermediate and Senior troupes, placed 1st to 3rd with Highly Commended.

A ready-made troupe dance competition for studios and schools: thirteen genres from ballet to pom, three open sections for stories, collaborations and schools, five-minute routines judged by average age, with trophies for first to third and Highly Commended.

This template models a one-day dance competition for troupes, built from an organiser’s own 2026 information pack for an event in Western Australia. A troupe is five or more dancers who perform a single routine together, and every troupe is placed against others of its own age category rather than against the whole field. Packs change from year to year, so check the current one before reusing dates, ages or entry rules.

Sixteen event types run side by side. Thirteen are genres: Classical Ballet, Neo-Classical, Demi-Character, Contemporary, Lyrical, Commercial Jazz, Jazz, Hip Hop, Song and Dance, Tap, Acro, Contortion and Pom. The other three are open sections that cut across genres: Production, a story-driven performance that may use several genres and several age groups, with a ten-minute limit; Collaboration – Anything Goes, where studios and dancers combine across genres, ages and styles; and Education, which is reserved for primary and secondary schools from the host region and accepts any genre.

Age categories are decided by the average age of the troupe, rounded to the nearest whole year, and rise in two-year steps: 6 and Under, 8 and Under, 10 and Under and so on. Open Age takes any troupe with an average age of 18 or more, or with dancers of 14 and over who want to compete at a higher level, and professional dancers and teachers compete in Open Age only. Separate Novice troupes, where at least 80 per cent of the dancers are not Open, run as Junior (5 to 10), Intermediate (11 to 14) and Senior (15 and over). Younger sections are split into Small Group (5 to 10 dancers) and Large Group (11 or more) depending on entries.

Routines run five minutes at most, and entrances and exits under ten seconds are not judged. A routine that goes over time receives a spoken critique only, with no score and no placing. Awards are trophies for first, second and third place, a Highly Commended certificate for fourth place at the adjudicator’s discretion, medals for individual dancers in the two youngest categories, plus perpetual and choreography awards and cash prizes. The pack says marking follows a set criteria sheet but does not print it, so the template installs every class as scored out of 100 with no criteria set; the organiser adds its own.

Where this event is run

Troupe sections, where a studio sends a whole team instead of a soloist, are a standard part of dance eisteddfods and competitions in Australia, and the same genre-by-age-category layout is used by dance competitions in many other countries. A Production or Collaboration section, in which several studios or ages share one stage, is a common way to give smaller studios a place in a large event. This template follows one organiser’s edition and suits any dance school, studio group, school cluster or arts council running troupe sections.

Key facts

  • Sixteen event types: thirteen genres (Classical Ballet to Pom) plus Production, Collaboration – Anything Goes and Education
  • Eleven groups: troupe age categories 6/U to 16/U and Open Age, three Novice troupe groups (Junior, Intermediate, Senior) and one all-ages group for the open sections
  • Troupes of five or more dancers, placed by the average age of the troupe, rounded to the nearest whole year
  • Time limits: five minutes for a routine, ten minutes for Production; a routine that runs over gets a spoken critique only, with no score or placing
  • Placings are First, Second, Third and Highly Commended; the pack prints no marking criteria, so every class is installed as scored out of 100 with no criteria set
  • Age categories above 12 and Under are continued from the pack’s two-year pattern, and every genre is listed in every group for the coordinator to trim

Yes — installing it creates a fully configured, live event, not a locked package. Every age group, competition item, rule and scoring setting can be edited afterwards to match exactly what your event actually needs.

Do I need technical knowledge to set this up?

No. Installing a template does the setup work for you; you only need to review the details (dates, unit or house names) and open registration.
