The Merrie Monarch hula competition of Hawaii: group Kahiko and Auana for wahine and kane, plus the Miss Aloha Hula solo.

Sets up a hula competition in the Hawaiian tradition: group Kahiko and group Auana for women and men, plus a women’s solo, with five placings and two special awards.

This template builds a hula competition in the style of the long-running Hawaiian contest held each spring on the island of Hawai’i. A coordinator opens an event that already holds the three competition items, the two divisions, the placings and the special awards, instead of starting from a blank catalogue. It suits any organiser staging a dance contest where old and modern styles are judged side by side.

The structure is a grid rather than a flat list. Hula Kahiko is the ancient style, danced to chant and traditional instruments, and Hula Auana is the modern style, danced to song and stringed instruments. Each is run as a group item for a Wahine (women) division and a Kane (men) division, so the same two items appear in both. Miss Aloha Hula is a separate solo competition for women. All three are on stage, performed in Hawaiian, with a ten-minute limit set as a working default.

The festival publishes no scoring rubric, point scale or age rules, so the template does not invent any. It gives each judge a single mark out of 10 per performance and applies no age limit. Placings run first to fifth, worth 10, 8, 6, 4 and 2 points, because the real results name five places in the women’s divisions and the Miss Aloha Hula solo (four in the men’s, varying with entries). Two real awards are included: a combined Overall award across Kahiko and Auana, and a Hawaiian Language Award in Miss Aloha Hula.

To run it, collect entries through the Registration Page, add your judges, and let the tabulation produce one ranked result per division. Because the Overall award spans two items, check how your own rules combine the Kahiko and Auana results before you announce it. The pageant side of the real event, such as parades and exhibitions, is not a competition here and is left out.

Where this event is run

Hawaii, where hula competition is a major cultural event, and any organiser running a dance festival, cultural society showcase or school heritage day that separates an ancient style from a modern one and runs men’s, women’s and solo divisions. It is a poor fit for a general multi-item arts festival, because it holds only three dance items.
