An inter-school competition for school children in Chennai, India, built from a 2025 rules booklet: Story Telling for Std I-IV, Recitation for Std V-IX, Carnatic and Bhajan vocal for both classes, and a Folk Music group event, with separate prizes by language.

A ready-made inter-school contest for a city or district: five items across a junior class band (Std I-IV) and a senior one (Std V-IX), language-wise Story Telling and Recitation, two classical vocal items, and a five-minute Folk Music group event.

This template models an inter-school competition for school children in Chennai, India, of the kind a cultural association runs for schools across a city each year. It was built from the newest printed rules and schedule booklet, the 2025 edition. An earlier edition also listed a Drama group event and Hindi in Recitation; the 2025 booklet does not, so they are not in the template. Rules change from year to year, so check the current booklet before reusing classes, languages or entry limits.

Five items run across two class bands. The Junior band, Std I to IV, takes Story Telling, Vocal – Carnatic and Vocal – Bhajan. The Senior band, Std V to IX, takes Recitation, Vocal – Carnatic and Vocal – Bhajan, plus a Folk Music group event. Story Telling runs separately in Tamil, English and Hindi, and Recitation in Tamil, English and Samskritham, with a separate set of prizes for each language, so the template carries one competition per language rather than one mixed competition.

Every item runs to a short clock: four minutes for Story Telling, for each recitation, and for the two vocal items, and five minutes for Folk Music. A group has four or five students. The rules limit each school to two students in any individual event and one entry in the group event, and a student may enter only one category. Those entry caps and the school-wise rolling cups the booklet describes are not fields on the platform, so the organiser applies them by hand when checking entries and presenting the cups; the platform records marks and rankings.

The booklet prints classes, not ages, so the template uses two placeholder age bands, 6-9 for Junior and 10-14 for Senior, with the printed classes as the class restriction. A coordinator should adjust the bands to the schools entering. No marking criteria are printed in the booklet, so every item is installed as scored out of 100 with no criteria set and the organiser adds its own score sheet.

Where this event is run

Inter-school competitions in which each school sends a few pupils to short individual items such as story telling, recitation and classical vocal, plus one group item, and prizes are given to pupils and to the best schools, are a long-standing format across India and in many other countries with school cultural calendars. This template follows one Chennai programme and suits any school cluster, children’s association, district education committee or cultural society that runs a multi-language school contest with junior and senior class bands.
