Printable judgement sheet for a solo singing competition (100 marks)

Print one sheet per entry, per judge. Identify the singer by chest number only. In a song item the panel will often recognise a voice anyway, but a sheet that carries no name is far easier to defend when a result is questioned.

For a classical music item, raise sruthi and laya and add a row for raga alignment and manodharmam, taken from stage presentation. For a devotional or gospel song, expression usually deserves more weight than selection. Adjust the sheet before the event is announced, never after the first entry has sung.

Group song judgement sheet (100 marks)

A group song is not a solo sheet with more singers on it. The panel is judging a unit — blending and coordination matter more than any one voice. Note that a single house, school or unit may enter several teams in the same item, each with its own team name, so score by team name and chest number together.

Short score sheet for light music, film songs and juniors

Six criteria are heavy for an LP child singing a two-minute rhyme, and some of them are the wrong questions for a film or light music item where audience appeal is part of the point. Use this four-criterion evaluation form instead — it is faster for the panel and easier to explain to parents.

Consolidated result sheet: combining three judges

Individual sheets record what each judge heard. The result needs a second sheet that adds them together. Keep this one at the tabulation desk, away from the panel and away from the stage.

Write the tie-break rule at the foot of this sheet before any marks go in. For singing the usual order is: higher marks on sruthi, then on laya, then a shared rank if the panel still cannot separate them. A tie-break decided after the totals are known always looks like it was decided to suit somebody.

How to use the sheets on competition day

• Print by age group and language. LP, UP, HS and HSS are judged separately, and a Malayalam song item is scored against Malayalam entries only — keep the stacks apart at the desk.
• Agree the scale in the briefing. Spend five minutes deciding what 20/25 on sruthi sounds like versus 14/25. Panels disagree far less about a singer than about what a number means.
• Fix the deductions in advance. Over-running the time limit, singing outside the announced language, or using a backing track where the rules said live accompaniment — decide the penalty before the first entry, and write it on the sheet.
• Collect sheets signed, in chest-number order. An unsigned sheet cannot be defended if a parent appeals.
• Tabulate with two people. One adds, one checks. Or let software do the adding and keep both of them free.

Six things: a header identifying the entry by chest number, age group and language; the list of criteria; the maximum marks against each; a blank marks-awarded column with a total row; a deduction row for time or rule breaches; and a remarks plus signature line for the judge. Without the last two, a contested result cannot be explained afterwards.

What is the marking scheme for a singing competition?

A commonly used 100-mark scheme is sruthi 25, laya 20, voice quality and clarity 20, expression 15, song selection 10 and stage presentation 10. Shift the weightage to fit the item — classical music leans harder on sruthi and laya, light music on expression and presentation — but publish whatever you choose along with the rules.

How is a group song scored differently from a solo?

Blending, harmony and coordination replace the individual voice criteria. The panel is judging whether the team sounds like one instrument — a group with one outstanding singer and five who are out of tune should score below an even, well-blended team.
