How to Run a Live Quiz Competition

A live quiz competition has more moving parts than a normal judged item: a question bank, a quiz master, candidates answering on their own phones, and a leaderboard that has to be fair. eTalenter runs this inside the event, so the quiz is linked to a real competition and its candidates. This guide is the setup walkthrough: create the quiz and choose its options, give the quiz masters their competitions, and let candidates join. It also lists the edge cases to decide before the day. Screenshots are from the read-only live demo, which has no quizzes yet, so the screens that need an existing quiz (writing questions and presenting) are described in words.

Where quizzes live in the app

Open Quiz in the coordinator menu. The page Quiz Competitions says “Create quizzes, then prepare questions and run them live” and has three shortcuts at the top: Prepare Quiz Questions, Present Quiz and Assign Quiz Masters. A quiz belongs to one competition of the event, so create the competition first (a Bible quiz, a general knowledge quiz and so on).

Step 1: Create the quiz and choose its options

Click New quiz. The form has these fields, numbered in the screenshot:

MarkerFieldWhat it does
1Competition (required)The event competition this quiz belongs to. The list shows each competition with its age group, language or gender.
2Title and DescriptionThe name candidates and the quiz master see, for example “Maths Quiz Round 1”.
3Default seconds / questionThe time allowed per question. The form starts at 30. Each question can set its own time.
4Enforce fullscreen & track foulsOn by default. Candidates are asked to stay in full screen and leaving it is recorded as a foul.
5Ask candidates to share their cameraOptional. Declining never blocks joining or answering. It is a live spot-check shown to the quiz master, and nothing is recorded or stored.
6Quiz languageThe language of the quiz. Leave it as “Any / not set” if the quiz is not tied to one language.
7Accept transliterated answersOn by default. A typed answer written in another script or spelling can still count, when the question lists it as an accepted answer.
8Ask for date of birth on joinOff by default. When on, candidates must also enter their date of birth, so a candidate number on its own cannot be used to play as someone else.
9Show live results on the presentation screenOff by default. When on, everyone in the room sees each candidate’s right and wrong answers and score as the quiz runs. Judges can still mark answers when it is off.

Step 2: Prepare the questions

Open Prepare Quiz Questions and pick one of your quizzes to write its questions. Questions can be grouped into rounds. A question has its text, a time limit in seconds and the points it is worth, and it is either a choice question (you add the options and mark the correct one) or a typed-answer question (you list the accepted answers: synonyms, spellings and transliterations, and any one counts). The page will not save a choice question without at least two options and a marked correct option, or a typed question without an accepted answer.

Step 3: Give the quiz masters their competitions

A quiz master is a user you invite as a judge. Open Assign Quiz Masters. The page says “Allot quiz masters to competitions so they can prepare that competition’s questions” (marker 1). Like the judge allotment page, it has two tabs, By Judge and By Competition (marker 2), and an Invite Judges button (marker 3) for people who are not in the event yet. In the demo the event has no judges, so the lists are empty.

Step 4: Run the quiz

On the day, open Present Quiz for the quiz. Click Start quiz: this puts the quiz in progress and creates the Game PIN. The screen shows the PIN and the address candidates join at. Use Next — show first question and then Next question to reveal each question, and Close quiz when it is over. A Fullscreen button is on the screen, and Live results shows the standings when you turned that option on. The quiz master can also mark answers by hand, and see who is connected, fouls and last seen times.

Step 5: Candidates join

Candidates open the Join Quiz page on their own phone. They enter the Game PIN shown on the screen (marker 1) and their candidate number (marker 2), then press Join (marker 3). The page asks them to allow location so the quiz master can confirm they are at the venue (marker 4). Give candidates their candidate numbers before the quiz, for example on their ID cards.
