Speech & Drama · United Kingdom
The 102nd Perthshire Musical (Competition) Festival (Perth, Scotland), with real Dramatic Solo and Dramatic Duologue classes sharing an identical 5-tier age ladder from Under 11 to 18 & Over.
A ready-made drama festival programme: a Dramatic Solo class and a Dramatic Duologue class, each run across the same five age tiers from under 11 to 18 and over, with time limits that grow as performers get older.
This template models the speech and drama section of a long-established regional music and speech festival in Scotland. It is deliberately small: two classes, Dramatic Solo (a monologue of the performer’s own choice) and Dramatic Duologue (a scene for two). What makes it useful is not the item count but the way the two classes mirror each other, because both are offered in exactly the same five age tiers.
The tiers are Under 11, 11 or 12, 13 or 14, 15 to 17, and 18 and over. The festival’s own regulation takes a performer’s age on the last day of the festival, so a pupil who turns 13 during the festival week still enters the younger tier only if they were 12 on that day. Because the solo and duologue ladders share their boundaries, an organiser never has to reconcile two different age systems, and a family entering a child in both classes finds them in the same tier.
Time limits are printed per class and include the spoken introduction. Solos run to 3 minutes for Under 11 through 13 or 14, then 4 minutes for 15 and over. Duologues run to 4 minutes for Under 11 and 11 or 12, then 5 minutes for 13 and over. The template installs these as the maximum duration for each assignment, so the timekeeper has a clear stop point. Solos are individual entries; duologues are team entries of two.
There is no mark-sheet in the source, so the template carries the platform’s nominal ten-point scale and no invented criteria. The festival withholds a trophy unless a performer reaches an average of 80, and gives certificates to all performers; an organiser who wants the same pattern can set that threshold in their own awards. Entry fees are installed as zero so each organiser sets their own. Judging is by a single adjudicator in the source, but eTalenter handles one judge or a panel equally well.
Where this event comes from
The structure comes from the festival’s own 2026 syllabus, which lists the two drama classes, their five age bands and their time limits.
Where this event is run
Age-laddered monologue and duologue classes are a standard feature of festival-style speech and drama competitions across the United Kingdom, Ireland and countries that follow the same festival tradition, where schools and drama teachers enter pupils year after year. The model suits any school, studio or community festival that wants a simple solo-and-pair drama section with fair, age-matched competition.
