The Kent Festival of Music, Speech & Drama (Canterbury, England, since 1905) Speech & Drama section, with real Monologue and Duologue classes across a school-year age ladder from Year 6 & Under to Year 12 & Over.

A ready-made speech and drama festival section with two classic classes, Monologue and Duologue, each entered across four school-year age bands from Year 6 and under to Year 12 and over, with the printed time limit for every band.

This template models the Speech & Drama section of a long-running English county music, speech and drama festival, held on a single Saturday at a school venue. It is built from the festival’s own printed 2027 syllabus, so the classes and time limits are real, but the syllabus should be checked again before it is reused for a later year.

Two items are modelled. Monologue is a solo piece of the performer’s own choice from a play (other than Shakespeare) or a dramatic adaptation of prose or an anthology, with up to three minutes allowed in every band. Duologue is a scene for two performers taken from a play or a duologue anthology, with up to four minutes for the youngest and middle bands and up to six minutes for the oldest.

Entrants are grouped by school year rather than by age: Year 6 and under, Year 7 to 9, Year 10 to 11, and Year 12 and over. The printed classes for the two items use slightly different boundaries, so the template uses the combined ladder and repeats each item’s real time limit across every band it covers. Both items are open to boys and girls and are entered in English.

The festival reports results through its federation’s adjudication bands rather than simple placings. That scheme is not modelled here: the template scores each performance out of 10 as a working convention, and a coordinator who wants the festival’s own banding should publish it as a written rule alongside the results.

Where this event is run

Monologue and Duologue classes are a standard part of amateur speech and drama festivals across the United Kingdom, and similar solo and paired drama classes appear in eisteddfods and performing arts festivals in Australia, South Africa and Canada. Schools and drama studios also run them as inter-house or end-of-term competitions.
