Talent Test · Community Talent Show

K-Days Talent Search (Explore Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) 2023: vocal, instrumental, dance and variety acts of up to 4 minutes 30 seconds in Junior (5-12), Youth (13-18) and Adult (19 and older) divisions, solo and group, through video and open auditions, semi-finals and a final, scored on 60 percent technique and 40 percent showmanship, built from the organiser’s own rules.

A ready-made community talent search with a single Talent Act class covering vocal, instrumental, dance and variety acts, entered by solo performers or groups in three age divisions and scored 60 percent technique, 40 percent showmanship.

This template models a community talent search held alongside a large summer fair in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Performers audition, the strongest move to semi-finals, and a small field of finalists competes on a main stage in front of a panel. It is built from the organiser’s published 2023 rules, so the divisions, the time limit and the scoring split are real, but dates, deadlines and conditions change from year to year and the current rules must be checked before the template is reused.

The rules rank acts by age division rather than by act type, so the template carries one class, Talent Act. A singer, a band, a dancer, a magician or a mixed variety act all enter the same class; the type of act is simply a registration detail. Every act is limited to four minutes thirty seconds, timed from the first sound or movement and including any introduction and closing flourish.

There are three age divisions: Junior (5 to 12), Youth (13 to 18) and Adult (19 and older). A multi-member act enters the division that matches its average age. The template splits each division into a solo group and a group group, giving six groups in all, so that every group has a clear participant type. The printed age tests rely on 1 July and 31 July cut-off dates that the platform cannot hold, so a coordinator should check dates of birth against the printed rule.

Semi-final performances are scored out of 100: 60 for technique and 40 for showmanship. Those two criteria are installed. The final uses a different split (60 technique, 30 showmanship and 10 for a short impromptu interview), but because a template carries one criteria set per class the final’s split is documented rather than installed. No placing points or grades are printed, so none are modelled. Maximum group sizes are printed inconsistently in the source and are left for the organiser to confirm.

The talent search is run by the events team of a large annual summer exhibition in Edmonton, Alberta, and has a published rule book for each edition.

Where this event is run

Open-category talent searches that rank acts by age division and not by discipline are common at summer fairs, exhibitions and community festivals across Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. They suit organisers who want one stage, one time limit and one scoring sheet for singers, dancers, instrumentalists and variety acts alike, with audition rounds feeding a small final.
