The national marinera championship of Peru, danced in couples across eleven official categories from Pre-Infantes through to De Oro.

Sets up a Peruvian marinera championship for couples: one item danced by mixed-sex pairs in eleven birth-year categories, elimination, semifinal and final phases with the published 2 to 7 and 4 to 7 scales, and gold, silver and bronze handkerchief honours.

This template rebuilds the structure of the National and World Marinera Contest held each year in Trujillo, northern Peru, so a coordinator opens an event that already carries the real categories, phases and honours instead of a blank catalogue. It suits a dance academy, a cultural society, a school or a city festival that wants to run a couples marinera championship in the same spirit, at any size.

There is a single competition item, Marinera Norteña for couples. A couple is a mixed-sex pair, and the pair, not the individual, is the entry that registers and is scored, so every category is set up as a team entry open to both genders. Categories are defined by birth year, which the template maps to age bands: Pre-Infantes (2 to 7), Infantes (8 to 11), Infantil (12 to 15), Junior (16 to 19), Juvenil (20 to 23), Adultos (24 to 36), Senior (37 to 50), Master (51 to 62) and De Oro (63 and over). Two further categories cut across the bands: Noveles, for beginners, and De la Unidad, an all-ages category that allows overlap so a grandparent and grandchild can dance together.

The contest runs in three phases: eliminatorias, semifinal and final. The source rules score the first two phases on a 2 to 7 scale and 4 to 7 respectively, and the template carries one grade for each. The panel looks at four things: poise, personality and spontaneity; grace; coordination and understanding between partners; and the footwork (zapateo). The final is decided by placing couples in order, not by adding marks, and ties are settled by the jury president’s casting vote, so mark the first two phases on the scales and treat the final as a ranking.

The honours are gold, silver and bronze handkerchiefs for first, second and third place in each category, and the template ships them as ranks. Adultos is the category that closes the contest and crowns the national champions. The source sets a ten-minute clock per performance, which the template keeps. Registration in the real contest is through the organiser’s own portal with identity documents; in your event, use the Registration Page to collect couples and confirm both partners’ dates of birth before assigning a category.

Where this event comes from

The contest was created in Trujillo in 1960 and was officialised by a Peruvian national law in 1986, which declares Trujillo the national capital of the marinera.

Where this event is run

Peru, as the flagship marinera championship, drawing well over a thousand couples from academies at home and abroad in a recent edition. The template follows that format and suits any organiser who wants a rounds-based couples dance contest with birth-year categories. It is less suited to solo dance or group choreography contests, where entries are not pairs.
