Academic & Youth Fair · School Bible Olympiad

The Dominican Republic’s national school Biblical Olympiad (Olympiad of Integral Human and Religious Formation) run classroom, center, district, regional and national: four grade categories from 5th Primary to 6th Secondary, each with a 50-point Biblical Written Test and a 50-point Curricular Creativity presentation, three winners and two honorable mentions per category.

A ready-made structure for a national school Bible olympiad: four grade-based categories, a 50-point written test plus a 50-point creativity presentation from the centre stage on, and three winners with two honourable mentions per category.

This template sets up a national school Bible olympiad as run in the Dominican Republic and described in the organiser’s 2023-2024 guidelines, where it sits inside a wider olympiad of integral human and religious formation. Pupils compete in four categories decided by school grade rather than by birth date: Category A for 5th and 6th Primary, Category B for 1st and 2nd Secondary, Category C for 3rd and 4th Secondary and Category D for 5th and 6th Secondary. Each category is tested on a different part of the Bible, from Biblical generalities and the Pentateuch for the youngest pupils to the Pauline letters and the Apocalypse for the oldest.

There are two individual items in every category. The Biblical Written Test is a sit-down paper on the category’s set books, and Curricular Creativity is a single presentation of up to five minutes, given as a monologue, a song, a poem or a decima. From the educational centre stage upwards each item is worth 50 points, so the final grade is the sum out of 100. The first stage, in the classroom, is different: it is a single written test worth 100 points, run by each teacher, and the template models the 50 plus 50 format used in the later stages.

The competition moves through five stages: classroom, educational centre, district, regional and national. The top three pupils per category in each classroom section go to the centre stage, one pupil per category goes from the centre to the district, two per category go from the district to the regional stage and two per category go from the regional stage to the national final, which brings eight pupils per category from each of 18 regions. A tie is broken by who handed in the written test first. At the national stage the top three places win in each category, with 4th and 5th place given honourable mentions, which makes twenty winners in total.

The template installs the four grade-based groups, the two items, a District and a Regional level beneath the educational centre, and the placings First, Second, Third and two honourable mentions. The guidelines print no points for places and no breakdown for the written test, and the six-criteria creativity form they include does not add up to 50, so no judging criteria are installed. The printed age ranges are also absent: the ages in the template (10-11, 12-13, 14-15 and 16-18) are a working band based on the typical age of each grade, and the real entry rule is the pupil’s grade.

Where this event comes from

Built from the English translation of one edition’s eight-page guidelines for the national school Biblical Olympiad (renamed an olympiad of integral human and religious formation for 2023-2024), issued by the curriculum team of the education ministry in Santo Domingo. It is the only edition supplied, so later editions may differ.

Where this event is run

A graded, multi-stage school olympiad of this kind is run by education authorities that want every pupil to take part at classroom level and the strongest to be filtered upwards through centre, district, regional and national rounds. This template reflects the Dominican Republic edition, where the audience is school pupils from the upper primary years to the end of secondary school. It suits any school system, diocese-wide school network or religious education programme that tests set scripture portions by grade and adds a short performance item to the written mark.

Key facts

  • Four categories fixed by school grade: A (5th-6th Primary), B (1st-2nd Secondary), C (3rd-4th Secondary) and D (5th-6th Secondary); the real entry rule is the grade, and the ages in the template are a working band
  • Two individual items per category: the Biblical Written Test and Curricular Creativity (a monologue, song, poem or decima of up to five minutes), both entered in Spanish
  • From the centre stage on, 50 points for the written test plus 50 points for creativity make a final grade out of 100; the classroom stage is a single 100-point written test
  • Five stages: classroom, educational centre, district, regional and national, with the top three per classroom section, then one, two and two pupils per category moving up
  • National stage: three winners per category plus two honourable mentions (4th and 5th), twenty winners in all; a tie is broken by who handed in the written test first
  • No judging criteria, time limit for the written test or place points are printed, so none are installed; the stage calendar, jury makeup, uniform and original-work rules stay as registration rules
