Beads Work Competition: What It Is, Where It’s Run and How It’s Judged

By

An on-the-spot Work Experience item in which a child strings or weaves beads into a decorative product, scored on workload, skill, materials knowledge and marketability.

Beads work is the art of arranging beads into ornaments and decorations: necklaces, bracelets, key rings, bags and wall hangings. Designs can be strung on thread, woven on wire or stitched in patterns.

In the Kerala School Sasthrolsavam Work Experience Fair (Pravrutthiparichayamela) it is an on-the-spot item for individual entrants, open to girls and boys at Lower Primary (classes 1-4), Upper Primary (classes 5-7), High School (classes 8-10) and Higher Secondary/VHSE (classes 11-12). Each child works alone for a fixed period at the venue, with the product then displayed for viewing at the district and state stages. Children at every level enter, with the same four-line score sheet applied throughout; judges simply expect more finish, accuracy and technical understanding from older entrants.

The child plans a colour pattern, threads or wires the beads in order, secures knots and finishes with clasps or loops. Judges look at regular spacing, tight finishing and the neatness of the back as well as the front.

Every Work Experience item uses the fair’s single shared score sheet: the workload and the child’s own contribution carry 40 marks, skill and completeness 25, knowledge of raw materials and tools 20, and social utility, speciality and marketability 15. For beads work, that means working all the beads and knots yourself earns the workload marks, tidy patterns and secure joints show skill, naming bead types, thread and wire shows knowledge, and wearable or usable designs earn the utility marks.

What judges look at in Beads Work

What a Beads Work panel is actually weighing up, and where the marks are usually won or lost:

  • Workload and the child’s own contribution (40): all stringing and knotting done by the child.
  • Skill and completeness (25): a regular pattern, tight knots and tidy finish.
  • Knowledge of raw materials and tools (20): names the bead types, threads and tools and explains the choice.
  • Social utility, speciality and marketability (15): a wearable, useful or giftable design.

Treat these as the judging focus, not a fixed rubric: publish your own weighted criteria for Beads Work under Scoring Setup, or start from the judging and scoring software guide.
