Vacation Bible School (VBS) wraps up the way it should — with a closing day the kids have been looking forward to all week. Bible verse recitation, a quiz on the week’s lessons, craft and coloring tables, an action-song performance: a handful of small, judged activities squeezed into one morning, in front of parents who are there to watch, not to sit through a multi-round tournament. It’s a genuinely different competition problem from a Sunday School talent test or a church youth kalamela, and running it off a notebook and a stopwatch is where most of the day’s chaos comes from.
What a VBS closing-day competition actually looks like
VBS runs for a short, fixed stretch — a week to ten days, usually during a school break — and almost every age group in the building is a young child, not a teenager. The competition slate is built around that: short attention spans, one sitting, same-day results.
| Age group | Typical age range | Sample items |
|---|---|---|
| Nursery / Beginners | 3–6 | Memory verse recitation, coloring, action song |
| Primary | 7–9 | Bible verse recitation, craft, Bible quiz (lower round), storytelling |
| Junior | 10–12 | Bible quiz, elocution/speech, drawing, group song |
| Senior (where a VBS runs one) | 13+ | Bible quiz (advanced round), extempore speech, skit |
None of this is laid down by a denomination’s manual the way a kalolsavam item list is — every church sets its own age bands and item list for its own VBS. The table above is a common, workable starting point, not a rule to copy exactly.
How VBS is different from the other church events on this site
Three Christian scenarios look similar from a distance but are not the same organising problem:
- VBS closing day — one church, one short programme, one closing morning. No promotion to a higher level. Results and certificates are usually handed out the same day.
- Sunday School talent test (see the church talent test programs list) — a year-round competition that can cascade from church to district to zonal to state, with winners promoted upward.
- Bible quiz competition (see Bible quiz competition software) — one item, run at real depth (rounds, buzzer formats, tie-breaks), often as its own standalone event rather than part of a mixed programme.
VBS borrows a little from each — it has a Bible quiz item and it gives out certificates like a talent test — but it is its own, smaller, single-sitting event. Setting it up as a cut-down version of the bigger events, rather than inventing a separate workflow, is the easiest path.
Setting up VBS in eTalenter
Because VBS runs at one church with no promotion ladder, the setup is deliberately light:
- Age Groups Setup — create Nursery/Beginners, Primary, Junior (and Senior if your VBS runs one) as Age Groups, matching however your church already splits its VBS classes.
- Event Levels — a single level is usually enough (the church itself is the only unit); skip the multi-level cascade a bigger kalolsavam or district talent test needs.
- Competition Categories/Items Setup and Assign Competitions to Groups — add your items (recitation, quiz, coloring, action song, etc.) and assign each to the age groups that will compete in it, with its own time limit and participant type.
- Scoring Setup — for young children, a simple grade (Excellent/Very Good/Good) or a short rubric reads better on the day than a 100-point scorecard a 5-year-old’s parents will scrutinise.
- Certificates — print a participation certificate for every child plus a distinct one for item winners, and hand both out the same morning Review & Assign Winners confirms the results.
Every child gets something to take home
VBS is participation-first in a way a competitive kalolsavam isn’t — the point of closing day is encouragement, not just ranking. Configure Awards so every child who takes part gets a participation certificate, with winners’ certificates layered on top for the items that were actually judged. That one setting is usually the difference between a closing day that feels like a celebration and one that feels like only three kids won anything.
FAQ
Does VBS need the same multi-level setup as a Sunday School talent test?
No. Most VBS programmes run at one church with no promotion to a district or state level — a single Event Level is enough. Only set up a cascade if your VBS genuinely feeds into a bigger talent test afterward.
Can very young children (Nursery/Beginners) be scored the same way as older classes?
You don’t have to. Use a simple grade scale for the youngest classes and a fuller rubric for Junior/Senior items like Bible quiz or elocution — eTalenter lets each competition item carry its own scoring setup.
What’s the quickest way to try this before VBS season?
Open the live demo and log in as a demo coordinator — no sign-up needed — to see Age Groups, Items and Certificates set up end to end before you touch your own event.
Want to see it before your next VBS? Open a live demo and log in as a demo coordinator or judge — no sign-up required. For a bigger church programme that runs across the year, see kalolsavam management software. Questions?
