Search “samskrithotsavam” and you will not find much beyond a handful of school circulars — yet it runs inside almost every Kerala school kalolsavam as its own, separate competition stream. Samskrithotsavam is the Sanskrit-language section of the festival: a dedicated set of recitation, writing, debate and drama items, judged and graded on its own item list, alongside — not instead of — the main Malayalam/English kalolsavam programme. If your school runs a Sanskrit stream and you are still tracking its scores on a separate sheet from the main festival, this is the item list, the age groups and the grading rule to set it up properly.
The figures below come from the evaluation-criteria chapters of the official Kerala School Kalolsavam Manual (General Education Department, Government of Kerala) and from the item schedule it publishes for the Samskritham section — not a generic guess at what a “Sanskrit festival” might contain.
Only two age categories — not four
The main kalolsavam runs LP, UP, HS and HSS categories. Samskrithotsavam does not: the official programme has no LP or HSS Samskritham section at all. It runs exactly two categories — Samskritham UP (classes 5–7) and Samskritham HS (classes 8–10) — so a class 3 pupil or a plus-two student has no Sanskrit item to enter, even though both compete in the main festival. That is an easy mistake for a coordinator to make when copying the main event’s age-group setup wholesale into the Sanskrit stream; it needs its own, shorter age-group list.
The 18-item Samskritham list
Eighteen items run across the two categories, split between on-stage performance items and off-stage writing items. A handful run separately for boys and girls; three — group song, group recitation-drama and group story — are Team items rather than Individual entries.

Every item in the manual carries its own printed rubric, each criterion weighted out of the item’s 100-mark total. Three sample sheets, transcribed as printed:

Grading: same bands as the main kalolsavam
Samskrithotsavam is graded on the same A/B/C scale the main festival uses: A Grade for 80% and above (5 bonus points), B Grade for 70–79% (3 points) and C Grade for 60–69% (1 point), with anything below ungraded. Those bonus points feed into the same house or school point tally as every other item — a strong Samskritham result matters for the overall trophy exactly as much as a strong Malayalam item does, which is one more reason it should not be scored on a side sheet that never reaches the main tabulation.
Setting it up on eTalenter

- Add two extra Age Groups — Samskritham UP (classes 5–7) and Samskritham HS (classes 8–10) — alongside your existing LP/UP/HS/HSS groups.
