Orthodox Syrian Sunday School Association co-curricular competition: Speech, Music, Group Song, Bible Verse, General Knowledge, Essay and the Ougen Bava Memorial Speech across 4 divisions from Sub-Junior to Higher Secondary.

Sets up a Malayalam Sunday school competition from its published circular: seven items (speech, music, group song, Bible verse, general knowledge, essay and a memorial speech) spread across four divisions from Sub-Junior to Higher Secondary, so a parish, district or diocese coordinator starts from the real programme instead of a blank page.

A Sunday school co-curricular competition is a graded set of contests that children enter through their parish Sunday school. This template follows one association’s published circular. Entrants compete first at school level, then move up through district and diocese to a zonal final, and each stage is run by a different set of volunteers, which is why a clear item list and timetable matter.

The programme is built around four divisions rather than one shared item list. Sub-Junior children (ages 4 to 9) enter Speech and Music only. Junior (10 to 12) adds Group Song and Bible Verse. Senior (13 to 17) adds General Knowledge. Higher Secondary (16 to 18) drops the spoken items and instead sits Bible Verse, General Knowledge and Essay, with a memorial speech of its own. That gives 7 items and 15 entries in all.

The items fall into three kinds. Speech runs for 5 minutes: at Sub-Junior and Junior the circular names the topic, while at Senior a topic is drawn by lot and the speaker is given a few minutes to prepare. Music is a 3-minute Malayalam Christian song, with classical music not permitted, and Group Song is a 3-minute team item for at least three singers drawn from a named repertoire. The written papers, Bible Verse and General Knowledge, are 45 minutes each and set from named reference books.

Every entry is marked out of 100. Music is judged on pitch (shruti), rhythm (thalam) and presentation, and the template installs time limits and maximum scores for each entry. Two details were read less clearly in the source: the Essay paper’s 45-minute length is inferred from the other written papers, and the Higher Secondary age cutoff is approximated. Organisers should confirm both against their current circular before the day.

Where this event comes from

This competition follows the published circular of a Sunday school association, which runs it as a ladder of rounds. The template reproduces that circular’s item table and time limits and nothing beyond it.

Where this event is run

Kerala, India, where parish Sunday schools hold school-level rounds that feed district, diocese and zonal competitions. The same seven-item programme suits any Malayalam-speaking Sunday school community, in India or abroad, that wants a graded programme of speech, song and written papers for children from nursery age to the end of school.

  • Sunday school communities elsewhere that follow the same Malayalam syllabus
