Kalotsavam · Sunday School & Church

Malankara Orthodox Christian Student Movement (MGOCSM) central arts festival, with Higher Secondary and College levels competing in devotional song, worship music, speech, essay, story and poem writing, cartoon and water colouring.

Sets up a church student-movement arts festival from its published circular: ten items (devotional song, group worship music, speech, mono act, writing papers, cartoon and water colouring) for Higher Secondary and College levels, so a unit or regional coordinator starts from the real programme instead of a blank page.

A student-movement arts festival, or kalamela, gathers the units of a church student organisation for one day of competition. This template follows the published circular for one such festival. Entrants are registered through their unit, compete at either Higher Secondary or College level, and are judged by a panel whose decisions the circular declares final, with no spot registration on the day.

The ten items fall into four kinds. Lalithaganam is a 3-minute devotional light song with separate male and female entries, restricted to Christian songs. Samooha Ganam and Aradhana Sangeetham are the two group music items: the first allows up to 8 members including instrumentalists for 6 minutes, the second allows up to 7 members with no instruments, also for 6 minutes. Prasangam is a 4-minute speech in English or Malayalam, and Mono Act is a 5-minute solo dramatic item based on a New Testament topic.

The off-stage items are timed papers. Upanyasam, Katharachana and Kavitharachana (essay, story and poem writing) each run for 20 minutes and can be entered in English or Malayalam. Cartoon is a 20-minute drawing item and Water Colouring is a 30-minute painting item. Running these beside the stage items means a venue needs a quiet room with invigilators alongside the performance stage, which the schedule has to plan for.

Every entry is marked out of 100. The circular does not print a grade scale, so the template applies a standard First, Second and Third ranking, which organisers can change. Eligibility is worth planning around: a participant may take at most 5 items in total and at most 3 individual items, and a unit may send only one team to each group item. The age range of 15 to 17 for Higher Secondary and 18 to 22 for College is a default, because the registration form names the levels without printing ages; confirm both against your current circular.

Where this event comes from

The programme follows the published circular and instructions of a church student movement’s central arts festival. The template reproduces that circular’s item list and time limits, and applies standard defaults only where the circular is silent.

Where this event is run

Kerala, India, where student-movement units register entrants for a central arts festival held on a single day. The same ten-item mix of devotional music, speech, writing and art suits any Christian student fellowship, youth league or college chaplaincy that wants a one-day competition with both performance and off-stage items.

  • Student groups elsewhere that follow a similar devotional arts programme
