A solo speech item in the Samskritham section of the Kerala school Kalolsavam, in which an entrant speaks on a topic and is scored out of 100 on language accuracy, diction, clarity of ideas, voice control, restrained feeling and presentation.
Prabhashanam is the speech item of the Samskritham programme. The word is the Sanskrit term for a talk or address: one entrant stands before the panel and speaks on a subject, and the performance is the speaking itself, not a recitation of fixed verse.
A round is simple to run. The entrant is called, takes the stage and speaks within the time limit while the panel marks six qualities. Four carry 20 marks each (language accuracy, clarity of diction, clarity of ideas and voice control) and two carry 10 each (restrained feeling and presentation), so correct language and clear ideas count for far more than showmanship.
On the template it is an Individual item offered to boys and girls together, in two age bands: Samskritham UP and Samskritham HS. Each band has a 5-minute limit with a warning at 4 minutes, and the item is scored out of 100 marks.
Organisers run it because it tests live command of the language rather than memory. It sits beside the memory-based verse items and the prose-reading item, and gives pupils who can think on their feet a place to shine. Its longer sibling, Chambuprabhashanam, is a separate HS-only item with its own marking.
Where Prabhashanam is run
Verified use is the Kerala school Kalolsavam programme. eTalenter carries Prabhashanam on the Samskritham add-on template and on the combined all-sections template, both built from the same state school programme, and in both it sits under On Stage. It appears in no other template in the library, so it should be presented as a Kerala school-festival item rather than an international one.

What judges look at in Prabhashanam
What a Prabhashanam panel is actually weighing up, and where the marks are usually won or lost:
- Language accuracy (Bhashashuddhi), 20 marks – correct grammar, word forms and vocabulary throughout the speech
- Clarity of diction (Aksharasphudatha), 20 marks – every syllable audible and distinct, with correct Sanskrit sounds
- Clarity of ideas (Aashayasphudatha), 20 marks – a speech with a clear point and an order a listener can follow
- Voice control (Shabdakrameekaranam), 20 marks – volume, pace and pitch managed so the voice carries without shouting or racing
- Restrained feeling (Mithamaya bhavam), 10 marks – expression that supports the content rather than acting over it
- Presentation (Avatharanam), 10 marks – posture, eye contact and a confident opening and close
- Four-fifths of the marks reward language, diction, ideas and voice, so a plain, correct speech usually beats a dramatic but careless one
Treat these as the judging focus, not a fixed rubric: publish your own weighted criteria for Prabhashanam under Scoring Setup, or start from the full elocution & speech judging criteria guide.
How to prepare for Prabhashanam
How entrants and their teachers usually get Prabhashanam right on the day:
- Choose two or three main points and an opening and closing line, then build the speech around them rather than writing every word
- Have a Sanskrit teacher check grammar and word choice, since language accuracy is a full fifth of the marks
- Practise aloud against a stopwatch and aim to finish just after the 4-minute warning, not at the limit
- Work on long and short vowels and aspirated consonants separately, because diction is marked on its own
- Vary pace and pause between points so the voice control mark reflects deliberate choices
- Keep gestures small and natural: the criteria ask for restrained feeling, not theatre
- Rehearse in front of a few listeners and ask them to repeat your main points back

Frequently asked questions
Is Prabhashanam judged individually or as a team?
Across eTalenter’s templates it’s most often run as an Individual entry, though an organiser can set either participation type when assigning the item to an age group.
What does Prabhashanam mean?
It is the Sanskrit word for a speech or address. In the Samskritham programme it is the item where an entrant speaks on a subject within a set time.
Is Prabhashanam an individual or a team item?
Individual. Each entrant speaks alone and is scored on their own speech, and boys and girls compete together in one competition.
How long is a Prabhashanam round?
The template sets a 5-minute limit with a warning at 4 minutes in both the UP and HS bands, and the item is scored out of 100 marks.
Is Prabhashanam the same as Chambuprabhashanam?
No. They are separate items with different marking. Chambuprabhashanam is a longer, 10-minute item offered at the HS band only, and its criteria include music suited to the text, which Prabhashanam does not have.
Is it judged on memory?
Not as such. The six criteria reward language, diction, ideas, voice, feeling and presentation, so how well the speech is spoken matters more than how much is memorised.
