Modelling with Clay Competition: What It Is, Where It’s Run and How It’s Judged

By

An on-the-spot Work Experience item in which a child models a figure or object from clay.

Clay modelling shapes soft clay into figures, utensils and decorative objects by pinching, coiling, rolling and carving, then drying or firing them.

In the Kerala School Sasthrolsavam Work Experience Fair (Pravrutthiparichayamela) it is an on-the-spot item for individual entrants, open to girls and boys at Lower Primary (classes 1-4), Upper Primary (classes 5-7), High School (classes 8-10) and Higher Secondary/VHSE (classes 11-12). Each child works alone for a fixed period at the venue, with the product then displayed for viewing at the district and state stages. Children at every level enter, with the same four-line score sheet applied throughout; judges simply expect more finish, accuracy and technical understanding from older entrants.

The child kneads the clay, shapes the form, adds details and smooths surfaces, then lets it dry. Judges look at proportions, texture and finish.

Every Work Experience item uses the fair’s single shared score sheet: the workload and the child’s own contribution carry 40 marks, skill and completeness 25, knowledge of raw materials and tools 20, and social utility, speciality and marketability 15. For modelling with clay, that means modelling it yourself earns the workload marks, smooth, well-proportioned forms show skill, knowing types of clay and tools shows knowledge, and a figure or article that could be sold earns the utility marks.
