Metal Engraving Competition: What It Is, Where It’s Run and How It’s Judged

By

An on-the-spot Work Experience item in which a child engraves a design on a metal surface, judged on workload, skill, materials knowledge and marketability.

Metal engraving cuts or scratches lines into a metal surface to make a pattern, picture or lettering. Simple tools produce fine, lasting decoration.

In the Kerala School Sasthrolsavam Work Experience Fair (Pravrutthiparichayamela) it is an on-the-spot item for individual entrants, open to girls and boys at Lower Primary (classes 1-4), Upper Primary (classes 5-7), High School (classes 8-10) and Higher Secondary/VHSE (classes 11-12). Each child works alone for a fixed period at the venue, with the product then displayed for viewing at the district and state stages. Children at every level enter, with the same four-line score sheet applied throughout; judges simply expect more finish, accuracy and technical understanding from older entrants.

The child marks a design on a plate, scores the lines with a fine tool, cleans and polishes the surface. Judges look at line steadiness, depth and the cleanliness of the finish.

Every Work Experience item uses the fair’s single shared score sheet: the workload and the child’s own contribution carry 40 marks, skill and completeness 25, knowledge of raw materials and tools 20, and social utility, speciality and marketability 15. For metal engraving, that means engraving the design yourself earns the workload marks, steady, even lines show skill, knowing metals and tools shows knowledge, and a polished plaque or plate earns the utility marks.

  • Skill and completeness (25): steady, even lines and a clean surface.
  • Knowledge of raw materials and tools (20): knows the metal, tools and cleaning method.
  • Social utility, speciality and marketability (15): a nameplate or decorative piece that could be sold.

Treat these as the judging focus, not a fixed rubric: publish your own weighted criteria for Metal Engraving under Scoring Setup, or start from the judging and scoring software guide.
