Garment Making Competition: What It Is, Where It’s Run and How It’s Judged

By

An on-the-spot Work Experience item at High School and Higher Secondary/VHSE in which a student cuts and stitches a garment.

Garment making is cutting and stitching clothing: measuring, marking, cutting fabric, stitching seams and finishing hems and fastenings.

In the Kerala School Sasthrolsavam Work Experience Fair (Pravrutthiparichayamela) it is an on-the-spot item for individual entrants, open to girls and boys at High School (classes 8-10) and Higher Secondary/VHSE (classes 11-12). Each child works alone for a fixed period at the venue, with the product then displayed for viewing at the district and state stages. It is an item for the older levels, so judges expect precise workmanship and a clear understanding of materials and tools.

The student takes measurements, marks and cuts the pattern, stitches seams, adds hems and fastenings and presses the garment. Judges look at fit, seam quality and finish.

Every Work Experience item uses the fair’s single shared score sheet: the workload and the child’s own contribution carry 40 marks, skill and completeness 25, knowledge of raw materials and tools 20, and social utility, speciality and marketability 15. For garment making, that means cutting and stitching yourself earns the workload marks, straight seams and a neat finish show skill, knowing fabrics, thread and machines shows knowledge, and a wearable garment earns the utility marks.
