A single singer performing a ballad, the slow, story-led song style, and placed in a skill-level band by score out of 100 rather than in a first, second and third order.

Vocal Ballad Solo is the section for a singer who wants to tell a story in a slow or mid-tempo song. A ballad is built around its lyric: the tune is usually gentle, the phrases are long, and the audience listens to the words as much as to the notes. In competition that makes it a test of breath control, clear diction and honest feeling rather than of volume or vocal tricks.

On the Time to Shine Dance Competitions template, which this page is written from, it is one of four vocal styles alongside Vocal Modern, Vocal Musical Theatre and Vocal Any Style, and it sits inside a dance-led event. Entrants enter a division set by years of performing training and by age. There are three experience levels: less than two years, two to five years, and five years or more. Each runs through its own set of single-year ages, from 4 and under for the youngest, and the two higher levels continue to Adult and Mature Age. A separate Masters division is open to teachers. Age is counted as at 1 January of the competition year. The template does not print which kinds of song count as a ballad, so organisers should say so in their own conditions.

A round is one song on stage. The singer is announced, the backing starts and the adjudicator listens to the whole performance while writing a critique. The score is out of 100 on five lines: Technique 40, Stage Presence 25, Execution of Performance 20, Choreography 10 and Overall Appearance 5. The total decides a skill-level band rather than a placing: Platinum Plus from 97, Platinum 93-96, Double Diamond 87-92, Diamond 80-86, Emerald 70-79 and Ruby 60-69. Several singers in one division can therefore earn the same band.

The vocal time limit printed for this event is three minutes, but the printed table does not make clear what applies to singers with under two years of experience, so the template sets no limit for that level. Boys and girls sing together and no language requirement is printed. Because the lines are the same five used across the event, Choreography is read here as the staging and movement that go with the song, and it carries only 10 marks. For a coordinator using eTalenter the item is handled like any other solo: register the singer in the right experience level and age division, record the adjudicator’s mark out of 100, and the band follows from the score.

Where Vocal Ballad Solo is run

In eTalenter data Vocal Ballad Solo appears on one template, Time to Shine Dance Competitions, an Australian multi-location dance competition series, where it carries 40 age and experience divisions. A ballad class is a staple of singing eisteddfods and talent festivals in many countries, but this page describes only what that template prints.

Key facts

  • Individual entry; boys and girls sing together; no language requirement.
  • Divisions on this template: three experience levels (under 2 years, 2 to 5 years, 5 years or more) crossed with single-year ages, plus Adult, Mature Age and a Masters division for teachers.
  • Time limit: three minutes for the divisions that have one; none is set for singers with under two years of experience because the printed table is unclear.
  • Scored out of 100: Technique 40, Stage Presence 25, Execution of Performance 20, Choreography 10, Overall Appearance 5.
  • Result is a skill-level band by score (Ruby 60-69 up to Platinum Plus 97 and above) with a written critique.
  • Song ideas, not rules: a slow love or farewell song with a clear story, a lullaby, a song about home, a quiet ballad that builds to one big final line, a song from a film sung simply.

What judges look at in Vocal Ballad Solo

What a Vocal Ballad Solo panel is actually weighing up, and where the marks are usually won or lost:

  • Technique (40): the largest share, so pitch, breath support, tone and clean phrasing of long lines decide most of the score; a ballad leaves nowhere to hide a flat note.
  • Stage Presence (25): the singer must hold the room with the story, using eye line and stillness, with a face that matches the words.
  • Execution of Performance (20): entering on the right beat, staying with the backing, finishing together with it and delivering the song start to finish without stopping.
  • Choreography (10): the staging that goes with the song, such as a few chosen gestures, a walk to a new spot for the last verse and a clear opening and closing position; over-busy movement costs breath and marks.
  • Overall Appearance (5): a neat, comfortable outfit that suits the mood of the song and does not distract from it.

Treat these as the judging focus, not a fixed rubric: publish your own weighted criteria for Vocal Ballad Solo under Scoring Setup, or start from the full group dance judging criteria guide.

How to prepare for Vocal Ballad Solo

How entrants and their teachers usually get Vocal Ballad Solo right on the day:

  • Enter the experience level by total years of training, not by age, because it decides who the singer is marked against.
  • Choose a ballad that sits comfortably in the singer’s own range, one they can sing well on a tired day, rather than one that stretches the top note.
  • Learn the story first: say the lyric aloud as a speech, decide what each verse means, and mark the single most important line.
  • Mark breath points in the lyric and practise long phrases on one breath until they are steady.
  • Prepare a clean backing track at the right key, test it on a different speaker before the day, and keep a spare copy.
  • Plan only a few simple movements and rehearse them while singing, so that movement never breaks the breath line.
  • Time the song against a stopwatch and cut a verse if it runs past the three minutes.
  • After a lower band, read the written critique and choose one technique point and one presentation point to change before the next event.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vocal Ballad Solo judged individually or as a team?

Across eTalenter’s templates it’s most often run as an Individual entry, though an organiser can set either participation type when assigning the item to an age group.

What counts as a ballad?

The template does not define it, so check the organiser’s own conditions. In general it is a slower, story-led song where the lyric matters as much as the tune.

How long can a vocal ballad solo be?

On the Time to Shine template the printed vocal limit is three minutes; no limit is set for singers with under two years of experience because the printed table is unclear. Other organisers set their own.

Is a singer marked on dance?

The event is dance-led and uses the same five lines for every item, including Choreography for 10 marks, but Technique at 40 and Stage Presence at 25 carry most of the score, so singing well matters most.

Is it judged as a competition for first place?

On this template soloists receive a critique, a score and a skill-level band rather than a first, second and third place, so several singers can earn the same band.
