A large group performs a choreographed dance in time with music, judged on rhythm, synchronisation and stage presence.

Large group rhythmic dance is the big-ensemble version of the rhythm-led dance class: a crowd of dancers, seven or more according to the international teen template’s source, move to the beat of one piece of music. Where a small group can win on tight, intimate unison, a large group is judged on whether many bodies can still behave like one, with every dancer on the same count across a whole stage.

A round is one prepared routine. The company enters, takes an opening shape, and performs choreography that moves between full-company unison, split sections that answer each other, and travelling patterns such as waves, diagonals, blocks and circles. Size changes the problems. Spacing has to be planned, because a wide stage turns a small error into a visible ripple, and entrances, exits and transitions between formations need rehearsal as seriously as the steps themselves.

The class sits in the Dance category of three eTalenter talent templates. A junior template carries it for a Junior Group of ages 7 to 12 with a five-minute limit and marks out of 5. An international teen template carries it for ages 13 to 19, rated out of 10 with a maximum of 5 and no time limit printed. A Jamaican talent showcase runs it twice, as a Children class and as a Youth class for ages 13 to 40, both marked out of 100 with no time limit printed. In every template it is a team item, open to both genders, in English.

Organisers run it so that whole classes, youth groups and dance schools can enter together rather than being limited to a handful of performers. Keeping it apart from the small group class, whose size range the teen template’s source sets at two to six, means a large company never has to compete against a tight quartet, and each is scored against what its size can realistically achieve.

Where Large Group Rhythmic Dance is run

On eTalenter this item is carried by three talent templates: a junior talent template, an international teen talent template and a Jamaican talent showcase. Large ensemble dance classes judged on rhythm and unison turn up in school concerts, youth programmes and community talent shows in many places, but this page records only the templates that carry the item, so organisers should check their own notice for the group-size range, time limit, stage size, music rules and judging headings.

What judges look at in Large Group Rhythmic Dance

What a Large Group Rhythmic Dance panel is actually weighing up, and where the marks are usually won or lost:

  • Rhythm and timing: the whole company landing steps and accents on the beat, with a steady tempo that does not drift as the routine builds
  • Synchronisation at scale: unison phrases matching in height, direction and finish across every row, including dancers at the edges of the stage
  • Formations and spacing: even distances, straight lines and clean circles that hold while the company travels, with no bunching or gaps
  • Transitions: moving between formations smoothly and on the count, without a visible shuffle or a pause while dancers find their places
  • Technique: tidy footwork, controlled arms and posture across the whole group, with movements finished rather than rushed
  • Choreography: a shape that uses the size, mixing full-company unison with split sections, levels and changes of direction
  • Stage presence: shared energy and focus from the front row to the back, and a confident opening position and final hold

How to prepare for Large Group Rhythmic Dance

How entrants and their teachers usually get Large Group Rhythmic Dance right on the day:

  • Count everything in eight-counts: write out the phrases, breaks and ending, and have the whole company say the counts aloud before dancing them
  • Teach in sections, and link them only when each section is clean; with many dancers one weak phrase spreads quickly
  • Draw every formation on paper, number the dancers, and mark floor positions with tape so each dancer knows where to stand at each change
  • Rehearse on a floor as large as the performance stage, or mark its dimensions, so spacing is not a surprise on the day
  • Appoint a few reliable dancers as anchors at the front, middle and ends of the lines, and have others take their timing and spacing from them
  • Film from the front and from above if possible, and check unison with the sound off; anyone who looks different from the rest needs a fix
  • Plan entrances and exits for the whole company, including how many walk on at once and where the last dancer stops
  • Time full run-throughs against any limit and trim a phrase rather than rush the steps
  • Confirm how the music will be played, bring a backup copy in a second format, and agree a clear signal for the first count

Frequently asked questions

Is Large Group Rhythmic Dance judged individually or as a team?

Across eTalenter’s templates it’s most often run as an Team entry, though an organiser can set either participation type when assigning the item to an age group.

How many dancers make a large group?

The international teen template’s source sets a large group at seven or more performers, with two to six entering the small group class. The junior and Jamaican showcase templates do not print the range, so organisers should publish their own.

How long can a large group rhythmic dance be?

The junior template prints a five-minute limit. The teen and Jamaican showcase templates print no limit, so organisers should publish one and companies should rehearse to it.

What is the difference between large group and small group rhythmic dance?

They are separate classes with their own results. The difference is team size: seven or more in the large group, two to six in the small group, according to the teen template’s source.

Is it judged as a team or as individual dancers?

As a team. The panel scores the company’s timing, unison and presentation together, although a few dancers who are clearly out of time will pull the whole score down.

Can a dancer be in both the small group and the large group class?

The templates list solo, small group and large group as separate classes, so entry rules depend on the organiser. Check your notice before registering a dancer in more than one.
