The school kalolsavam is only the first step. After it come the subjilla kalolsavam (ഉപജില്ല കലോത്സവം, the sub-district festival), then the district kalolsavam (ജില്ലാ കലോത്സവം) and finally the state school kalolsavam (സംസ്ഥാന സ്കൂൾ കലോത്സവം) in January. This page explains the 2026–27 season in order: when each level usually runs, who goes up to the next one, and what to do if a result looks wrong.

For comparison, the last state festival — the 64th — was held in Thrissur from 14 to 18 January 2026. The venue and exact dates for the 2027 state festival are announced by the General Education Department; check the official portal rather than relying on a date you saw on social media.
Who goes from subjilla to district, and from district to state?
The rule is short, and it trips up parents every year. Under the 2025–26 guidelines, only the candidate with the top score who also has an A grade is eligible for the next level. Both conditions have to be true:
- First place, B grade — does not go up. Winning the item is not enough if the mark is below 80%.
- A grade, but not the top score — does not go up. Several children can earn an A in one item, but only the top one moves on.
- Top score with an A grade — goes up to the next level.

If a result looks wrong: appeals at each level
Every level allows an appeal against the judging, for a fee that rises with the level. Under the 2025–26 guidelines the fees were:

Each circular sets its own deadline for filing an appeal. If you plan to appeal, ask the venue’s programme office for the time limit as soon as the result is announced, not the next day.
How to find your subjilla’s schedule, venue and results
- Ask the school first. The kalolsavam coordinator at your school gets the sub-district circular with the venue, dates and reporting time before anyone else.
- Use the official KITE Ulsavam portal. It has a page for each sub-district with the programme schedule, venues and results as they are published. A new address is set up each season, so search “Kerala school kalolsavam” with the current year to find this season’s link.
- Check the item and chest number. Results are listed by item and category, so keep the child’s chest number and the item code handy. Categories and time limits for every item are in the kalolsavam item list 2026–27.

For organisers: moving winners up without typing them twice
Between levels, the hardest job is handing on the qualifiers: the school’s top A-grade winners have to become the subjilla’s entry list, and the subjilla’s winners become the district’s. Done on paper, every name, class and item is typed again at each step — and that is where spelling mistakes and wrong categories creep in. Frequently asked questions
When is the subjilla kalolsavam in 2026?
Sub-district kalolsavams usually run in October and November, after the school-level festivals. Each district announces its own dates and venues, so check with your school’s coordinator or the official KITE Ulsavam portal for your sub-district.
Does first place at the subjilla kalolsavam mean my child goes to district?
Only if it is also an A grade (80% or more). Under the 2025–26 guidelines, the next level is open only to the top score with an A grade. A first place with a B grade does not go up.
Do district qualifiers need to register again?
No fresh public registration is needed. The qualifiers are sent up from the level below by the coordinators, based on the published results. Keep the chest number and item details from the previous level ready in case you are asked for them.
