A national-level school literary competitions programme is organised differently from a kalolsavam or a college fest: the groups are by school class, not by age or faculty, and almost every item is scored out of a flat total rather than a long rubric. Below is a real programs list, taken from a national schools association’s literary-competitions rules, kept generic (no organisation name) because the structure itself — three class bands, a short item list, 50-mark judging — repeats across many inter-school literary meets.

Class bands, not age bands

The association’s rules print school classes, not ages, so every band carries a class range instead of a birth-year cut-off:

BandClassesTypical age
Sub-JuniorsVI to VIII11–13
JuniorsIX and X14–15
SeniorsXI and XII16–18

Each band runs as two groups — an Individual pool and a Team pool — with no separate boys’ and girls’ events. One event per candidate is the only entry-limit rule the source prints.

The items list

Creative WritingIndividualAll three30 min planning + 90 min writing
Painting / DrawingIndividualAll three4 hours
DeclamationIndividualAll three3 min (Sub-Juniors), 4 min (Juniors, Seniors)
DebateTeam of 2 (one for, one against)Juniors, Seniors only4 min, warning bell at 3

Debate is the only item restricted to the two older bands — Sub-Juniors don’t debate under this rule set. Storytelling and Poem Writing are newer additions that appear only in the zonal edition, each capped to one band and one language.

Item rules and marks

  • 50 marks per item, not 100. The source’s printed judging criteria for Creative Writing, Painting/Drawing, Declamation, Storytelling and Poem Writing each total 50, so these install as a single maximum score rather than a criteria breakdown.
  • Debate scores per team, not per speaker. Each of the two speakers is marked separately and the pair’s marks are added, so a Debate team’s maximum is 100 — double every solo item.
  • Quiz carries its own breakdown. Only in the newest zonal edition does the source print a scheme for Quiz: knowledge 20, speed 15, team coordination 15 (50 total).
  • A time-overrun penalty. Going over the stage time costs 5 marks per judge — a flat deduction, not a sliding scale.
  • Awards without points. Participation certificates go to everyone; First, Second and Third get merit certificates nationally, and gold/silver/bronze medals at zonal level. The rules print no points per placing, so results stop at the award, with no points table feeding an overall school championship.

What changes between the national and zonal rounds

The national-level rules cover five items: Creative Writing, Painting/Drawing, Declamation, Debate and Quiz. The newest zonal edition (the one schools register for locally) adds Storytelling and Poem Writing and is the first to print a Quiz marking scheme. An older zonal edition — five items only, registration through the association’s own portal, a flat per-student fee, and a window of about ten days to hold every event — shows how much a rules document can change release to release. Always build from the edition your own schools are registering under this season, not last year’s copy.

Rules the platform has no dedicated field for — one entry per school per category, travel and accompanying-teacher limits, formal attire without school identification marks, word limits on writing items, and a semifinal round once more than six Quiz teams enter — are best kept as plain registration-page text rather than forced into a structural setting.

For judging criteria on the individual items, see debate, declamation and elocution and painting and drawing. For the software to run the whole meet across class bands and zones, see kalolsavam and school competition management software.

Class-based groups, Individual and Team pools per band, per-item time limits with a warning bell, and a flat marks total instead of a rubric are all settings, not code. Chest numbers and ID cards print straight from the registered class list, judges score on their phones, and results lock once approved — whether your zone awards medals, points, or both. Frequently asked questions

Why are the groups based on school class instead of age?

Some school associations group participants by the class they’re enrolled in rather than by birth year, since class is what every school already records and verifies. A class band like “VI to VIII” still maps to a representative age range for anyone cross-checking eligibility.

Why does Debate score out of 100 when every other item is out of 50?

Debate is judged per speaker. Each of the two team members is marked on the same 50-mark scale as a solo item, and the team’s score is the sum of both speakers — so the team maximum doubles to 100.

Do these competitions carry points towards an overall school championship?

Not under this rule set. The source prints certificates and medals for the top three placings in each item and band, but no points table that would add up to a combined school or team championship.

Can Sub-Juniors take part in Debate?

No. Debate is restricted to the Junior and Senior bands under this rule set; Sub-Juniors have Creative Writing, Painting/Drawing, Declamation, Quiz and, at zonal level, Storytelling instead.

What is the time-overrun penalty?

A flat 5-mark deduction per judge for going over the stage time allowed for the item — not a sliding or per-second scale.
