Panchavadyam is one of the few team percussion ensemble items on a school kalolsavam item list, and it is judged on a completely different five-criterion scheme from any solo instrumental item. If you are setting up judging for a Panchavadyam round, here is the verified scoring scheme, the age-category rules, and how to run it cleanly on eTalenter.

What is Panchavadyam?

Panchavadyam is a traditional Kerala temple percussion ensemble performed by a team, built around five classes of instruments playing together in a structured tempo progression. On a school kalolsavam item list it is entered as a Team (group) item, not an individual one — a full ensemble registers as one entry, the same way a Group Song or Group Dance team does.

It is a different item from the solo percussion competitions on the same list — Thabala, Mrudamgam/Ganchira/Ghada, and Madhalam are each judged solo, one performer at a time. Panchavadyam and its close relative Vrunda Vadyam are the ensemble versions, scored on ensemble coordination rather than individual technique.

Panchavadyam Competition Judging Criteria

Panchavadyam judging criteria (verified, 100 marks)

The scoring scheme is five equal criteria, each worth 20 marks, for a 100-mark total:

CriterionMarks
Blend of instruments20
Tempo (Layam)20
Coordination of instruments20
Rhythm (Thalam)20
Tone (Nadam)20
Total100

Notice that four of the five criteria judge the ensemble as a whole (blend, tempo, coordination, rhythm) and only one (tone) looks at individual instrument sound — which is exactly what you’d expect for a group item where the performance is judged as one unit, not as several individual solos averaged together.

Category, gender and time-limit rules

CategoryParticipant typeGenderMax timeMax score
Category III (classes 8–10)TeamBoth (mixed teams allowed)20 min (19 min warning)100
Category IV (classes 11–12)TeamBoth (mixed teams allowed)20 min (19 min warning)100

Panchavadyam runs only at Category III and Category IV — it is not offered at the younger Category I or II levels on this item list, reflecting the ensemble skill it demands. Both categories share the same 20-minute ceiling with a warning at 19 minutes, and both allow mixed-gender teams.

How this differs from Vrunda Vadyam and the solo percussion items

It’s easy to mix up Panchavadyam with its sibling ensemble item, Vrunda Vadyam, so it’s worth being explicit: Vrunda Vadyam is judged on Blend of instruments, Tempo (Layam), Rhythm (Thalam), Handling the instruments and Tone (Nadam) — a different fourth criterion (handling, not coordination) and a different running time (10 minutes, not 20). The two items also sit at different Order positions on the same Category III/IV item list, confirming they’re entered and scored as separate competitions, not variants of the same one.

Against the solo percussion items — Thabala, Mrudamgam/Ganchira/Ghada, Madhalam — the distinction is simpler: those are Individual items scored on personal technique (tone, fingering, improvisation, practice), while Panchavadyam is scored on how well a whole team plays together.

Setting up Panchavadyam on eTalenter

  • Add Panchavadyam as a Team competition item under Category III and Category IV, with a 20-minute time limit and 100 max marks.
  • Build teams during registration — via Bulk Participant Management or the Public Registration Form — so each ensemble registers as one entry, not as several individual candidates.
  • Load the five criteria (Blend, Tempo, Coordination, Rhythm, Tone, 20 marks each) into the judging panel so judges enter marks against named criteria instead of a single blank total.
  • Judges score from a phone or tablet during the performance; eTalenter tabulates the 100-mark total per team automatically and feeds it into the results and awards.
