Pure Construction Competition: What It Is, Where It’s Run and How It’s Judged

By

An individual Maths Fair item at High School and Higher Secondary/VHSE in which a student makes accurate geometrical constructions with instruments.

Pure Construction is a geometry item judged on precision. The student constructs figures with compass, ruler and set squares: triangles from given measures, tangents to circles, regular polygons, angle bisectors and similar.

In the The Kerala School Sasthrolsavam Mathematics Fair (Ganithashastramela) it is an individual item at High School (classes 8-10) and Higher Secondary/VHSE (classes 11-12), open to girls and boys.

Judges give 15 marks for accuracy, preciseness and beauty, but also expect the student to explain the steps and the proof behind each construction.

The write-up shows each step, the reasoning and the final figure.

Where Pure Construction is run

This item is part of the official Kerala School Sasthrolsavam Mathematics Fair, the state school mathematics exhibition that runs from school level through sub-district, district and state rounds, and is installed on eTalenter through the Maths Fair template built from the official item list and evaluation indicators. This page describes the Kerala format only.

Key facts

  • Individual item, girls and boys.
  • Offered at High School and Higher Secondary/VHSE.
  • Content and mathematical value 30, curriculum link 20, presentation and write-up 25, accuracy, preciseness and beauty 15, exhibition 10.
  • Instruments only; no software.
  • Steps and reasons are explained.
  • A write-up accompanies the constructions.

On eTalenter, Pure Construction is filed under Special and typically scored with Marks. It appears in 1 ready-made event templates — each one can adjust its time limit, age-group assignment and scoring setup independently.

Across the templates that use it, Pure Construction is most often entered as an Individual competition, typically scored out of 100.

What judges look at in Pure Construction

What a Pure Construction panel is actually weighing up, and where the marks are usually won or lost:

  • Knowledge of content and mathematical value (30): correct methods and reasons.
  • Relationship with the curriculum (20): constructions from the syllabus.
  • Mode of presentation and write-up (25): numbered steps.
  • Accuracy, preciseness and beauty (15): thin lines, exact arcs.
  • Exhibition (10): ability to repeat a construction.

Treat these as the judging focus, not a fixed rubric: publish your own weighted criteria for Pure Construction under Scoring Setup, or start from the judging and scoring software guide.

How to prepare for Pure Construction

How entrants and their teachers usually get Pure Construction right on the day:

  • Practise each construction until it is clean.
  • Use a sharp pencil and keep arcs visible.
  • Number the steps in your write-up.
  • State the reason each step works.
  • Present on good paper with a neat border.
  • Be ready to construct on the spot.
  • Check the final figure with measurements.
  • Idea to try: a series of constructions of tangents to a circle
  • Idea to try: a regular pentagon with a proof of the steps
  • Idea to try: a triangle with its incircle and circumcircle
