A Lower Primary team collection item that appears in both the Science and the Social Science fairs of the Kerala Sasthrolsavam, each with its own marking table.
Collections is a hands-on item for the youngest entrants. A team gathers real objects around a theme, such as leaves, seeds, feathers, rocks, shells or fabrics, arranges them in an orderly display, labels them and explains what they show about the natural world.
In the Kerala School Sasthrolsavam Science Fair it is a team item at Lower Primary (classes 1-4), open to girls and boys together. It is one of the entry points into the fair for children who are not yet building models or running research.
The Social Science Fair also runs a Collections item at Lower Primary as a team entry, scored on diversity 30, collection method and child participation 20, relation with the curriculum 20, organisation 20, and explanation or interview 10. Typical social science collections are old coins, stamps, postcards, currency notes, local crafts or photographs of heritage places.
What matters is that the collection tells a scientific story. Grouping leaves by shape, seeds by how they travel, or stones by hardness shows children are observing, sorting and thinking. The team stands by its display and explains how it was gathered and what was learned.
Marks reward scientific principles and sources most heavily, then the display and labelling, then the explanation, so the child’s understanding counts more than a pretty board.

What judges look at in Collections
What a Collections panel is actually weighing up, and where the marks are usually won or lost:
- Scientific principles and sources (50): a clear scientific idea behind the collection and honest sourcing of the items.
- Display, arrangement and labelling (30): neat grouping, clear labels and a logical order.
- Explanation (20): children can say what they collected, where from and what they noticed.
Treat these as the judging focus, not a fixed rubric: publish your own weighted criteria for Collections under Scoring Setup, or start from the judging and scoring software guide.
How to prepare for Collections
How entrants and their teachers usually get Collections right on the day:
- Pick a theme a child can observe, such as leaf shapes, seed dispersal or kitchen spices.
- Collect only what is allowed and safe; never harm live animals or protected plants.
- Sort the items into groups first, then decide the order of display.
- Write a short label for each item with its name, where it was found and one fact.
- Practise a one-minute talk where each child explains one group.
- Mount items firmly so they survive travel.
- Tell the judges where each specimen came from.
- Idea to try: fallen leaves sorted by shape and edge pattern
- Idea to try: seeds sorted by how they spread: wind, water, animals
- Idea to try: household spices with notes on which plant part each comes from
- For the Social Science version, collect a varied set such as coins, stamps or local crafts and be ready to say how the children gathered them.
