Charts Competition: What It Is, Where It’s Run and How It’s Judged

By

A Lower Primary team chart item that appears in both the Science and the Social Science fairs of the Kerala Sasthrolsavam, each with its own marking table.

Charts is a drawing-and-explaining item for Lower Primary children. A team prepares a chart that shows a science idea visually: the life cycle of a butterfly, parts of a plant, the water cycle, healthy and unhealthy foods or the phases of the Moon.

In the Kerala School Sasthrolsavam Science Fair it is a team item at Lower Primary (classes 1-4), open to girls and boys. The manual’s score table for this item prints four criteria that do not add up to a full 100, so eTalenter lists the item without a scoring table and judges apply the event’s own sheet.

The Social Science Fair runs its own Charts item for Lower Primary (classes 1-4) as a team entry. Its table is subject relevance and ideas 30, diversity 20, creativity and organisation 20, attractiveness 20, and explanation or interview 10. A social science chart might show family and neighbourhood helpers, a map of the school surroundings, festivals, transport or local occupations.

A good chart has one main idea, large readable drawings, correct labels and a clear order, with children able to explain it. Neatness matters, but accuracy and understanding matter more than decoration.

Charts are one of the easiest items to start with, so they work well for schools sending their first science fair team.

Where Charts is run

Charts is part of the official Kerala School Sasthrolsavam Science Fair and Social Science Fair, both at Lower Primary level, and is installed on eTalenter through both fair templates. This page describes the Kerala format only.

  • Kerala, India

Key facts

  • Team item, girls and boys together.
  • Offered at Lower Primary (classes 1-4) only.
  • The manual’s printed table for this item does not total 100, so no per-criterion marks are published here.
  • Judged on accuracy, clarity, neatness and explanation.
  • One main idea per chart works best.
  • Children should explain their own chart.
  • Social Science Fair: team item at Lower Primary with a five-line table led by subject relevance (30).

On eTalenter, Charts is filed under Special and typically scored with Marks. It appears in 2 ready-made event templates — each one can adjust its time limit, age-group assignment and scoring setup independently.

Across the templates that use it, Charts is most often entered as an Team competition, typically scored out of 100.

What judges look at in Charts

What a Charts panel is actually weighing up, and where the marks are usually won or lost:

  • Accuracy: the science and the labels must be correct.
  • Clarity: one idea shown clearly with large drawings.
  • Neatness and finish: tidy lettering and colouring.
  • Originality: a fresh way of showing a familiar idea.
  • Explanation: children can talk about the chart in their own words.

Treat these as the judging focus, not a fixed rubric: publish your own weighted criteria for Charts under Scoring Setup, or start from the judging and scoring software guide.

How to prepare for Charts

How entrants and their teachers usually get Charts right on the day:

  • Choose one idea and write it as a heading.
  • Sketch the layout in pencil first and fix spelling before inking.
  • Use large, bright, accurate drawings.
  • Label every part with a short word.
  • Leave margins so the chart looks calm and readable.
  • Practise a one-minute explanation with each child speaking.
  • Roll the chart carefully so it does not crease.
  • Idea to try: the life cycle of a frog from egg to adult
  • Idea to try: a chart of plant parts and what each does
  • Idea to try: a food chart showing foods that help bones, eyes and energy
  • For the Social Science version, choose a theme from your class’s environmental or social studies and show diverse examples.

Frequently asked questions

Is Charts judged individually or as a team?

Across eTalenter’s templates it’s most often run as an Team entry, though an organiser can set either participation type when assigning the item to an age group.

Why is there no marking table?

The manual’s printed table for this item does not add up to 100, so it is not reproduced here.

Can children use pictures cut from magazines?

Hand-drawn work shows more of the child’s own effort, which usually judges better.

Is it for upper classes?

No, Lower Primary only.

How many children are in a team?

The manual prints two for most group items in this fair.

Is the Social Science Fair chart judged the same way?

No. It has its own table: subject relevance and ideas 30, diversity 20, creativity and organisation 20, attractiveness 20, explanation or interview 10. The Science Fair chart has no installed table.
