A folk-inspired singing class that allows the most creative freedom, scored out of 10 across seven age divisions.

Styled is the third and freest class of the three-way folklore split. A styled vocal entry takes folk music as its inspiration rather than its fixed text: the singer may reinterpret a traditional song in a personal voice, blend it with other styles, or perform a new piece that clearly draws on folk melody, rhythm or story.

On the template it is an individual item offered in seven divisions: Mini Kids (4 to 6), Kids (7 to 9), Children (10 to 13), Junior (14 to 17), Adults, Senior (50 and over) and a Mixed Age division. Each entry receives one score out of 10 as Marks, with Polish as the language setting, and results are ranked inside each division.

A round runs one singer at a time. Because the class invites originality, the panel is judging both the singing and the idea: does the interpretation have a point of view, and does the folk root still show through? Entries that wander so far that no folk influence remains tend to sit better in an open vocal class than here.

Organisers offer a styled class so that confident performers have a place for personal interpretation, alongside the stricter authentic class and the arranged processed class.

Where Vocal – Styled is run

On eTalenter this item is used in one template, an international folklore dance and music festival template based in Krakow, Poland, where each discipline is offered in authentic, processed and styled forms. Folk competitions elsewhere sometimes keep an open or contemporary class beside the traditional ones, but the boundaries differ, so the organiser’s own notice decides what counts as styled.

What judges look at in Vocal – Styled

What a Vocal – Styled panel is actually weighing up, and where the marks are usually won or lost:

  • Clear folk inspiration: melody, rhythm, text or story that the audience can trace back to the tradition
  • Originality of interpretation: a personal voice and a reason for the choices made
  • Intonation and vocal control, particularly when the style stretches the line
  • Diction and communication, so the song still reaches the listener
  • Coherence: the style, accompaniment and delivery should feel like one idea
  • With one score out of 10 and no printed sub-criteria, the panel’s overall impression decides the result

Treat these as the judging focus, not a fixed rubric: publish your own weighted criteria for Vocal – Styled under Scoring Setup, or start from our judging and score tabulation guide.

How to prepare for Vocal – Styled

How entrants and their teachers usually get Vocal – Styled right on the day:

  • Read the organiser’s notice to see how far a styled entry may depart from the folk source, and whether backing tracks are allowed
  • Choose a song or theme whose folk root you can explain in one sentence, then decide what you are changing and why
  • Keep one recognisable folk element, such as a melody line, a rhythm or a refrain, as the anchor
  • Rehearse the whole entry with its exact accompaniment so the start, tempo and ending are clean
  • Record yourself and listen for words that get lost; the voice should stay in front
  • Choose the correct age division, since each is ranked separately, and keep the key within a comfortable range
  • After a loss, ask whether the idea, the vocal control or the link to folk music held the entry back and work on that one thing
  • Ideas, not rules: a traditional lullaby sung over a modern rhythm, a work song with a spoken-word verse, or a folk tale told as a sung story
