A solo Bharatanatyam item for school pupils in classes 3 to 12, danced within five minutes and judged on thalam, bhavam, accuracy of body movements, costume and make-up, and expression of the dance.

Bharatanatyam – Solo is an individual classical dance item in a Tamil Nadu school arts festival. It is offered in four class bands: classes 3 to 5, 6 to 8, 9 to 10 and 11 to 12. Boys and girls compete together, there is no language requirement, and each band is its own competition, so a pupil in class 4 never dances against a pupil in class 11.

A round is a call sheet of dancers. Each pupil is called in turn and has up to five minutes on stage. The template sets no warning bell, so the supervising teacher or organiser has to signal the time left. The pupil performs a Bharatanatyam piece, which blends rhythmic footwork with expressive storytelling through face, eyes and hand gestures, usually to recorded or live Carnatic-style music.

The panel marks five things at twenty marks each: thalam (keeping to the rhythm), bhavam (feeling and expression), accuracy of body movements (angasuddham, the clean lines of the arms, legs and posture), costume and make-up, and the overall expression of the dance. Each judge marks out of 100 and the marks are combined. Because the item is judged as a classical form, a dancer who mixes in film or folk steps is likely to lose marks on accuracy even when the routine is lively.

Organisers run the item because Bharatanatyam gives pupils a structured, long-established art to train in over many years, and a school festival is often where a young dancer first performs it in front of an independent panel. It is kept separate from the group Bharatanatyam item and from the Folk Dance and Other Dance Styles items, so entrants are compared with dancers of the same form.

What judges look at in Bharatanatyam – Solo (பரத நாட்டியம் (தனி))

What a Bharatanatyam – Solo (பரத நாட்டியம் (தனி)) panel is actually weighing up, and where the marks are usually won or lost:

  • Thalam (20): footwork and hand beats land on the rhythm and stay with it through every change of speed; drifting ahead of or behind the beat is the commonest place for marks to be lost.
  • Bhavam, feeling and expression (20): the face and eyes carry the mood of the piece, and the story is clear to someone who does not know the song; a technically correct but blank dancer scores below one who plainly feels the piece.
  • Accuracy of body movements, angasuddham (20): half-sitting posture, straight lines of the arms, steady head and eye movements and clean hand gestures; marks drop for wobbling posture, bent lines or gestures that are half-formed.
  • Costume and make-up (20): the traditional dress and make-up are complete, tidy and secure enough to dance in; loose pleats, slipping ornaments or an unfinished look are marked down.
  • Expression of the dance (20): the whole performance holds together, with energy at the start, variety through the middle and a clean finish, rather than a collection of separate steps.
  • Time discipline: five minutes is a ceiling, not a target; one tight, clean piece scores above a long one that tires or repeats itself.

How to prepare for Bharatanatyam – Solo (பரத நாட்டியம் (தனி))

How entrants and their teachers usually get Bharatanatyam – Solo (பரத நாட்டியம் (தனி)) right on the day:

  • Choose a piece that suits the pupil’s stage of training. A simpler piece danced with clean lines and steady rhythm scores above a difficult one that is rushed or half-remembered.
  • Practise thalam on its own first: say or clap the beat cycle while doing the footwork without music, then add the music, so the rhythm stays accurate when the pupil is nervous.
  • Work on posture and lines every session, using a mirror where one is available. Angasuddham is easier to fix in front of a mirror than in front of the panel.
  • Practise the expression separately from the steps. Take the story or mood of the piece and rehearse the face and eyes alone until they read clearly from the back of the hall.
  • Plan the costume and make-up a few weeks ahead and dance in them at least twice before the festival, so nothing slips or tires the pupil on the day.
  • Time a full run on a stage-sized floor and leave a little spare. Build in a clear starting pose and a clean finishing pose rather than fading out.
  • After a loss at school level, ask which of the five criteria cost the most marks and work on that one next, whether it is rhythm, feeling, posture, dress or overall flow.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bharatanatyam – Solo (பரத நாட்டியம் (தனி)) judged individually or as a team?

Across eTalenter’s templates it’s most often run as an Individual entry, though an organiser can set either participation type when assigning the item to an age group.

Is Bharatanatyam – Solo the same as the group Bharatanatyam item?

No. This is the individual item, with one pupil on stage and a slot of up to five minutes. The template carries a separate group Bharatanatyam item for teams of four to nine, so check which one a pupil is entering.

How long does each pupil get?

The template sets up to five minutes per pupil in every class band. It carries no warning bell, so the organiser or the supervising teacher announces the time remaining.

What do the five criteria mean?

Thalam is keeping to the rhythm, bhavam is the feeling and expression, accuracy of body movements is clean posture and lines, costume and make-up is complete traditional dress, and expression of the dance is how well the performance holds together as a whole. Each is worth 20 marks.

Can a pupil mix in folk or film steps?

The marking is built around Bharatanatyam as a classical form, with 20 marks for accuracy of body movements, so steps borrowed from other styles are likely to lose marks. Pupils who want to dance another style can enter the Folk Dance or Other Dance Styles items instead.
