A short unseen-style classical dance round of about one minute, open to Juniors 12 and under and Seniors 13 and over, scored out of 100 and awarded places rather than skill-level bands.
Improvisation – Classical is a very short dance round in which the performer creates the movement in the moment, within the classical ballet vocabulary, instead of presenting a rehearsed routine. Where a classical solo is polished for months, an improvisation tests how well a dancer’s training has become second nature: positions, port de bras, turns, jumps and travelling steps have to appear, in a sensible order and in time with the music, with no set choreography to lean on.
On the Time to Shine Dance Competitions template, which this page is written from, the round is offered in two groups, Juniors 12 and under and Seniors 13 and over, to boys and girls together, and is entered as an individual. The rules print the length as approximately one minute, and the template stores a one-minute limit. The document names Classical as one of four improvisation styles (the others being Tap, Jazz and Lyrical/Contemporary/Neo Classical) and uses improvisations as part of the qualification route to its Championships. It does not print how the music is chosen or whether it is heard beforehand, so the organiser should state this in the event information.
A round is brief. The dancer is called, the music begins and the adjudicator watches the full minute. The mark is out of 100 across the five lines shared by every item on the template: Technique 40, Stage Presence 25, Execution of Performance 20, Choreography 10 and Overall Appearance 5. Unlike solos, which receive a skill-level band, improvisations are awarded places, so the scores are used to rank the entrants in each group.
Organisers add an improvisation class because it separates dancers who have memorised a routine from dancers who truly understand the style, and because a minute is easy to fit into a busy programme. In eTalenter it is run like any other individual item: register the dancer in the correct group, record the adjudicator’s mark out of 100 and let the ranking produce the placings.
Where Improvisation – Classical is run
In eTalenter data Improvisation – Classical appears on one template, Time to Shine Dance Competitions, an Australian multi-location dance competition series. What judges look at in Improvisation – Classical
What a Improvisation – Classical panel is actually weighing up, and where the marks are usually won or lost:
- Technique (40): clean classical positions, turnout, placement, pointe or demi-pointe work as appropriate and controlled landings, shown in whatever steps the dancer chooses in the moment.
- Stage Presence (25): focus and calm from the first beat, a face and carriage that carry the whole minute, and a confident start and finish.
- Execution of Performance (20): staying with the music, finishing the movement phrases the dancer begins and recovering smoothly from any wobble without freezing.
- Choreography (10): the shape of the minute, with a sensible order of steps, use of the whole stage and a clear ending rather than a string of repeated steps.
- Overall Appearance (5): a neat classical costume and hair that let the lines of the body be seen.
Treat these as the judging focus, not a fixed rubric: publish your own weighted criteria for Improvisation – Classical under Scoring Setup, or start from the full group dance judging criteria guide.
How to prepare for Improvisation – Classical
How entrants and their teachers usually get Improvisation – Classical right on the day:
- Practise improvising weekly to music the dancer has never heard, starting with thirty seconds and building to a full minute.
- Build a mental menu of classical steps (a turn, a jump, a travelling step, an arabesque and a held balance) and aim to use each at least once in the minute.
- Listen for the phrase of the music in the first few bars and let the largest step land on the strong beats.
- Plan a clear ending pose in advance so the minute always finishes tidily, whatever happens in the middle.
- If a step goes wrong, carry on in character and move to the next one; judges mark the recovery as well as the slip.
- Wear exactly what would be worn for a classical solo, and warm up so the first step is ready to go straight away.
- Ask the organiser how the music is selected and whether it is played in advance, since the template does not print this.
- Read the written feedback afterwards and pick one weakness, such as repeating the same step, to work on before the next event.

Frequently asked questions
Is Improvisation – Classical judged individually or as a team?
Across eTalenter’s templates it’s most often run as an Individual entry, though an organiser can set either participation type when assigning the item to an age group.
How long is the improvisation round?
Approximately one minute on the Time to Shine template. Other organisers set their own limit.
Is Improvisation – Classical the same as a Classical Solo?
No. A classical solo is a rehearsed routine of up to three minutes that receives a skill-level band. The improvisation is a one-minute round created in the moment and awarded places.
Who can enter?
On the Time to Shine template it is offered to Juniors 12 and under and Seniors 13 and over as an individual entry.
Can I prepare steps in advance?
The template does not print rules on this. The point of the round is to respond to the music, so entrants usually prepare a vocabulary of steps rather than a routine. Ask the organiser for the exact conditions.
