Most national school arts festivals ask every entrant to do roughly the same thing: perform live, in front of a judge, on a stage. FLS3N — Festival dan Lomba Seni dan Sastra Siswa Nasional, Indonesia’s national student arts and literature festival for primary-level (SD/MI) students, run through the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education’s talent-development body — splits the difference. Three of its seven branches happen on a stage, one is a craft entrants build with their hands, and one is a story they simply write down. If your festival mixes performance, visual art and writing under one results sheet, FLS3N is the closest real-world template for how that actually gets judged and promoted.

The seven branches of a primary-level FLS3N

The SD/MI technical guide covers seven competition branches, each entered as its own judged item:

  • Expressive Drawing (Gambar Ekspresi) — individual, on-the-spot drawing to a set theme.
  • Solo Singing (Menyanyi Solo) — individual, a single song performed live.
  • Craft from Waste Materials (Kriya) — individual, a handmade object judged on creativity and finish rather than performed.
  • Storytelling (Mendongeng) — individual, a spoken story performed live, time-capped at 10 minutes in every round.
  • Story Writing (Menulis Cerita) — individual, a written entry judged off-stage rather than performed.
  • Pantomime (Pantomim) — a two-performer team, a silent physical-theatre piece.
  • Dance (Tari) — a three-to-five-performer team, capped at 7 minutes in every round.

Five branches are Individual entries and two — Pantomime and Dance — are Team entries, so a school’s roster for this festival is really two separate kinds of registration happening side by side, exactly the Individual-vs-Team split eTalenter’s Competition setup already separates out.

Eligibility is by school class, not age

Where a kalolsavam or a sports day groups entrants into age bands, FLS3N’s own guide groups entrants by school class: only students currently in class 3, 4 or 5 of an SD/MI (primary school) may enter — roughly an 8-to-11 age range if you need an Age Group label for it, but the actual eligibility test is the class, not the birth year. Each school may send at most two entrants or teams per branch, so even a large school can’t flood a single branch with every capable student — it has to choose its best two.

Scoring: fixed weighted criteria out of 100, no placing points

Every branch is scored out of 100 against its own printed set of weighted criteria rather than one generic rubric reused everywhere. Solo Singing splits 30/30/30/10 across voice material, vocal technique, interpretation and stage performance; Story Writing splits 35/25/20/20 across originality, creative development, language use and message; Dance splits 15/25/30/30 across idea, technique, appearance and creativity — and the other four branches each carry their own distinct weighting, all totalling exactly 100. What the guide does not print is a bonus-points table: results are named places — Juara 1, 2 and 3 (First, Second, Third) plus Juara Harapan 1, 2 and 3 (“Hope” / commendation ranks) — with no numeric points attached to any of them, a pure-placings model rather than the points-and-grades combination a kalolsavam uses. If you’re deciding between a points system and a placings-only one for your own event, our placings vs. grades guide walks through exactly this choice.

School to national: a four-stage promotion ladder, run mostly online

FLS3N cascades upward in four stages. A school enters its best two per branch; each regency or city (kabupaten/kota) then sends forward only its single best entrant or team per branch to a provincial preliminary round, held online; and each province’s first-place result from that round advances to a national final, also held online. Nobody re-registers at a higher stage — exactly the qualifier-promotion pattern eTalenter’s multi-level Event Levels are built for, not fresh sign-ups at every tier.

Setting this up on eTalenter

  • Create two Age Groups per class band you’re running — an Individual group and a Team group — using class (3/4/5) as the real eligibility filter rather than a birth-date cut-off.
  • Add Expressive Drawing, Solo Singing, Craft, Storytelling and Story Writing as Individual competitions, and Pantomime and Dance as Team competitions.
  • Build each item’s own judging criteria in Scoring Setup with its own weights summing to 100 — Solo Singing’s 30/30/30/10 is not the same split as Dance’s 15/25/30/30, and the platform lets every item carry its own sheet.
  • Configure your result grades as named placings (First, Second, Third, Hope 1–3) with zero bonus points, rather than the points-per-rank model other kalolsavam-style events use, and cap entries per school in Assign Competitions to Groups.

Our judge scoring & tabulation guide covers building a multi-criteria sheet per item, and a mixed on-stage/off-stage event like this is handled the same way as the written-and-performed items we cover for Philippines’ national schools press conference — some entries get a stage slot, others get a submission deadline, and both flow into the same results sheet. For the online entry cap and per-school registration limits, our online competition registration page covers how that’s configured.

You can try the class-based grouping, per-item weighted rubrics and placings-only grading yourself. Open a live demo and log in as a demo coordinator or judge — no sign-up required.

FAQ

Does every student at FLS3N perform on a stage?
No. Five of the seven branches are Individual entries, but Craft and Story Writing are judged off-stage from a physical or written submission — only Expressive Drawing, Solo Singing, Storytelling, Pantomime and Dance involve a live performance or on-the-spot task.

Is eligibility based on a student’s age?
No. The guide sets eligibility by school class — 3, 4 or 5 — not by age; an age range is only a rough approximation if your own setup needs one.

Do winners get points added to a running total, like a kalolsavam?
No. The guide prints named placings only (First/Second/Third and three Hope ranks) with no bonus-points table, so there’s nothing to carry forward into a combined points championship unless an organiser builds one on top of it themselves.
